100% correct. I've owned a Japanese TBC-5 Custom and it was one of the best basses I've ever played...

Question fellow Japanese Tune owner: What is the knob layout of your bass. Mine is a bit unclear. Im pretty sure the top 2 are volume & p/u blend. However, the bottom knobs seem to be (from the bottom) treble, bass, & I can't determine the last knob. It has no center detent which leads me to think its not the standard EQ knob.

i also bought a used GAP518 last week and have the same question. it equipped with gap1 pream and i really don't like it. i will switch to gzp2 preamp.
gap-1 contol is:
Master volume,Pickup balancer
Treble:+17dB/-17dB at 8kHz
Bass:+15dB/-15dB at 90Hz
Notch filter:-20dB at 850Hz/+6dB boost
Trim of PCB:Middle trimmer +12/-12dB at 350Hz

maybe the knob without center detent is the notch filter:confused::confused::confused:.

Sign me up...I've owned this Tune Zii 6 since the early 90's. Pups are now Bart soapbars, and the preamp is a Bart three band 18 volt, but everything else is unchanged.

Warnan is correct. The third eq knob has no center detent because the centered position isn't "flat" (it goes from -20dB to +6dB at 850K).

Hi Doug, thanks for ur help. After i listened to ur A/B sound clips of ur modded tune twb5, i decided to upgrade my tune gap518 also. I sent my pickups to Mr.Armstrong to rewound it. Hope i could get more clarity.

Good luck with your upgrades, Warnan. You have a great bass, so it should be worthwhile for you to fix it up.

By the way, some folks have asked how to distinguish MIJ Tunes from MIK Tunes. Most of the nicer old MIJ basses had the serial number stamped in ink on the back of the headstock, so that's one way to tell. However, not all MIJ Tunes have that type of serial number, so you can't always tell from that. Of course, if you can confirm that the instrument was made prior to 1999, then you can be sure it's a Japanese bass.

hie... guys. i'm from Malaysia. Am using '91 Japan Tune TWB-5 Birdseye Maple. :)

Been wondering... the GAP-1 preamp has some sort of a tweakable-with-a-screwdriver thingy going on. It's almost as if it changes the output strength of the bass. Any idea what this is? And does it affect the battery lifespan?

Also what are the characteristics of the notch filter? What kinda sound does it produces tweaking it from one end to the other?

Anyway.. it's great to know there's a tune club. Kinda hard to get info on these basses generally.

I've seen couple of cases. Some (rare) of them were original with TUNE signature. Some of them were (like mine) just GC or other generic replacement.

Do you have any idea how to get Japanese or Korean TUNE case?

That Japanese web site seems to be very expensive (35,000-36,750 yen)
