I think really the only model that can be seen as iconic is the Hyperbass.

You would not include his Legacy fretless (Bub), the one he played with Michael Hedges?

Definitely not. I wouldn't include his original Legacy OR his Sonus "hyperbass".

Besides, I'm probably in the only city who has residents who know who Michael Hedges was (and that aren't musicians).

There are very few iconic basses. If there are any that are Zon's, it would only me Michael's Hyperbass (and I say "if").

The discussion of iconic instruments is really about the discussion of an iconic player who happens to be associated with a particular instrument

Another funny thing about Zons - many folks have never seen one. My last few sub gigs I had multiple folks in the bands asking about my bass... Seems they'd never heard of Zon. Odd - Zon has been out for a long time and made a whole lotta basses...

Well, most people haven't heard of anything beyond Fender and Gibson, since by numbers or years they are still fairly small and new, respectively.

I know many people (even musicians, or even worse, bassists) that never heard of brands like Ken Smith, Pedulla, Tobias, Lakland or Sadowsky.

Whenever I am out playing somewhere I never come across a guitar player who has heard of Zon. And that goes for a surprising number of the bass players too. I sometimes get the impression that people think it's a cheapo Asian instrument ( i.e. a modern day Teisco del Ray) and that they don't want to ask questions for fear of embarrassing me. Seriously!

When I do encounter a bass player who recognizes the name Zon, I find that they've usually never seen one in person or played one. But they're definitely interested and there's lots of wow factor and lots of questions.

BTW I play a Sonus 5 Custom.

I find that most bass players know a lot of the makers names but Zon typically isn't on that list. This may have some bearing on the 'used Zon' pricing discussion a while back.

We have to be careful this does not get to watered down. This is like the Hall of Fame, the Cooperstown of basses. Iin Major League Baseball the critics say that letting in Ralph Kiner watered down the HOF for everyone else. Let's keep our standards for iconic bass players AND their basses high
