That's because you are out of the US. In the US there is a mandated price for all dealers, so the price is always the same.

Well, We have a very good retailer here in SD and I wouldn't want to screw them (nor would Joe, I'm sure). Truthfully, I much rather play before I buy - and ideally buy used... but I may be SOL... at least for this bass...

Yeah...exactly. Zons in other countries are WAY more expensive ($6500 is cheap for a Legacy in Japan- many top $10k), so you got yours for US prices probably. Hence why it was cheaper, like I said.

I found a cool interview with tetsuya (not sure of the year but at least 2006 or earlier) where he discussed getting his first Zon, here's a snippet:
- Why did you choose a ZON?
[Back then, I was thinking "There just aren't any good basses around...". ZON wasn't being used by many people, plus it had a high class image, so I thought it might be good (laughs).]
- You certainly dont see them much in Japan, and there very few musicians who use them.
[That's right, and it cost me about 800 000 yen. I wonder if it still costs that much... I figured "Can't go wrong with something this expensive". That's the price, the real price (laughs). At the time, Pearl (instrument makers) also ran an import agency, and someone from Pearl gave me a ZON Legacy Elite to try out and play. That is, if I liked it I could just buy it as it was.]

I've recently bought a Custom 5 (thanks Chris for your help
) .
I've been told that "neck is straight" but "needs shimming".
Of course it's a very non-technical question but why if a neck is straight it should need a shimming ?

Hey Francesco,
The shimming that that bass needs is actually to angle the neck backwards. Whoever set it up after the neck refinish did a horrible job- the neck is actually angled forward (like a V). The bridge side of the neck pocket needs a shim to correct the neck angle. The neck itself is great, but the angle of the neck in the neck pocket is not right, so it has ok action at the nut but horribly high action at the upper frets.
I'd like to hear what STRINGS other Zon owners are using? (brand, type, gauge).
Marrying the right string with the right bass can be a struggle, but it can also produce pure bliss when finally achieved. I'm just curious as to what others have discovered with the phenol necks and their string choice.
