p.s. : update : Zon is doing its best to let me go on tour WITHOUT the instrument they promised to complete three weeks ago.
My mistake, it was not on TB, but here's what the owner wrote about this peculiar Vinny.
In Oct. of 2007, I came to the realization that the only way to get a 5-string Steinberger to sound like all my 4-string Steinies was to design a custom built bass.
My dear friend Jonni Lightfoot told me that Joe Zon could build exactly what I wanted right down to the last detail (save a 5-string TransTrem, of course.)
I went through every EMG pickup to find the closest thing to the old HB and found that the 40TW was the closest match.
Then I placed my order for a custom Zon VB-5 with those pickups matching the spacing of my 4 string 'Bergers.
Then the body was made from rock maple (like my XQ-2 Rev 1 bodies.)
Finally, it was painted gloss black with 6150 frets and the standard Zon neck.
The result arrived today, and it's so close to the sound of my
Steinbergers that it's almost eerie! She's what I've been waiting for; vintage Steinberger tone with 5 strings.

If you've never played a set of TI JF's before, they may feel a bit strange. They worked hard with gauges and materials to make the strings from thick to thin feel as uniform as possible from a tension standpoint, which is kinda' different from most strings. But if they do feel a bit odd, stick with them! They do an amazing job of accentuating the way a Zon fretless can "sing", and their tone is really pure. I'd imagine they'd work equally well on a fretted, but I haven't tried that myself. They're also kind of expensive, but they do last a really long time, so it kinda' works out.

I want to say Zebra wood??? I'll have to dig up the paper work.
that top looks like Zebra wood to me...I have a Goncalves top on my Zon, and it doesn't have the vertical pin striping like this one has, or the lighter tone.
Maybe it's just a digital picture and/or white balance thing, but I really don't think it's Zebra. Angus usually knows this stuff pretty well because he's got a lot of access to Zon and has probably seen a ton of these things go by.
I'd say Goncalo as well. Here's mine for (sort of) reference. I never have enough light.
