Official Zon Club Part 3

Teaser pic... in theory, should ship today, which means I'll most likely have it Monday... maybe Friday if I get super lucky (not counting on it).

Koa top, wenge tone plate, ash body, Sonus 5, bart three band with mid switch, 19mm spacing, 24 frets, 34" scale.

Thanks guys... ok, it for sure ships today. First full picture below, and I'm told it weighs in at pretty much 8 pounds, which is perfect. I like the fact that the board turned out all solid black too... some of his phenowood has kind of a figuring with some lighter areas and such, but I prefer the "gaboon ebony-like" look.

I'll probably have it early next week, and I'll try to shoot a few initial pictures to post. Can't wait! :)

I believe you're right. Other than selecting a special top, this is a straight up Sonus 5 since the 34" 19mm 24 fret is a "standard option" now (noting it was available before per Angus, but not really considered a standard thing until last NAMM... at least according to Joe and Mark anyway).

Hey Vic the new Zon looks incredible!! can't wait for further pics when you receive the bass. I noticed you have many different basses in your stable...which one(s) do you seem to gravitate towards the most? for me I've tried many high end basses, but seem to always come back to my Zon Tj6 (Erskine Model), now its all I play, I've sold just about everything else (except my '62 Jazz fretless). the only basses I haven't tried that has me curious is Skjold's and Fodera's. Pete is doing some great things with his basses and seems to be more innovative with design and function. I think the Skjolds are just as well done as Foderas without the sticker shock and "status" of course. the Zon just feels and sounds so good, I think its the composite/phenowood neck that is so nice....I can do things on the Zon that I could never do on any another bass...its hard to go back to wood again.

I get asked that a lot of course. The answer is "several". From a player's perspective, it's really not good, because like any professional, and especially in the artistic realm, becoming "one" with one's instrument is pretty key to becoming as fluent as possible. But I still like the variety so much I just switch things out depending on what I'm "feeling" the most on a given day, and it has less to do with logic than you might think. Sometimes I literally just pull several out, play a few riffs, and bag up the ones that speak to me the most that day.

That said, you mention Skjold. Well, my Skjold is one of the basses I've had the longest at this point, and probably gets pulled as much as I pull anything. My Sadowsky is another, etc., etc..

The funny part is, I know what you're saying about the Zons. Joe definitely has the magic compound that gets you a really natural sound, but at the same time, the benefits of every note ringing true, long, and loud, with a fundamental purity that's exemplary.

And I still play my older Sonus 5 a fair amount but because it's 17mm spacing, if I pull that bass, I pretty much have to play that one all night. Not that that's a huge problem, it's a fantastic bass, and it is nice to play on tighter spacing sometimes. But this new one is 19mm which is like most of my other stuff, so the intent is to play a Zon more frequently, and to do that, I wanted it to feel a little more like my other stuff.
