I read in the Bee Bass club some are also waiting 4-5 years, with little to no communication from Fred. He's a one-man operation though.
How many are building at Zon? Is it just Joe?
Wyn is another builder with a long wait list and an impacted build time. But like most cases, the time spent waiting on your bass is reduced to a mere faint memory once your bass is in your hands.
The difference with Wyn, is he tells you in advance it will be a 2 or 3 year wait. Likewise, there's a considerable wait time for Wal. Again, he also gives you a reasonably estimated timeframe.
The main difference is communication.

The key thing here is communication. Any length of wait is fine as long as you're prepared for it. It's lack of communication, unfulfilled promises and unreturned calls or emails that are the problem really. Some folks are cool with that, some folks aren't.

Paid my down payment on a 5-string Sonus Special. Now the wait begins. I guess that makes me an apprentice member of the Zon club?
Congrats! Your username is very appropriate for the type of bass you have decided to order 
You may be better off buying a Sonus fretted from here or Reverb. Not that I have any experience finding my preferred Zon in either location.
So maybe don't listen to me...
I'm starting to worry that may be my only way to get what I want. May your bass dreams come true!
Unless you really want a custom build I'd think looking for used - even if it takes a year to find what you want - is going to be the way to go.
Been looking for going on 24 years now. Probably the first 18 were passive looking, but the last 6 have been more active. The last 4 have been checking frequently on as may sales places as I can.
If I'd had the money years ago, I am nearly sure I'd have the bass now.
Love that model. I should have bought the used one from the Newsted collection when it was available recently.
My first Zon was a fretless Sonus Special 5 that I bought new from Joe in 1997. All my phots of it are un-pixelated® but there is this video of me playing it from back in the day.

No. The Zon shop is now in Emeryville. They're OK, at least for the time being.
I know where the fires are. Our home is in the middle of the CZU fire. Time will tell if it makes it. We had to evacuate on Tuesday night. Only was able to take one bass, of course it was my Zon.
We did get out with the animals and family, and are safe and staying with friends.
