Regarding the pickup placement, I read Damien Erskine was going to get a signature Zon. One of the things he wanted were the pickups next to each other and near the bridge. He didn't get his signature Zon but I have seen this pickup placement on a number of TJ's.

The neck pickup has a warm, beautiful voice soloed. Both pickups on though doesn't have the "scooped" voice like a bass with more normal pickup placement.

Regarding tight spacing, the bass I just sold had 14mm string spacing. This TJ5 feels like it has the Grand Canyon between the strings.

And there is even more to the history of this bass! Or at least to the body....

Joe et al made the body for me with a fretless neck. After receiving, I decided I wanted a couple of different things and sent it back. They made me a new body with more space between the pickups and a bit larger body overall. It was after this I understand that the body was given a new fretted neck for NAMM.

Pictures attached when it was at my house and with my fretless neck which is on my Zon now as it was shaped according to my preferences. We actually shipped the neck back and forth a couple of times to get this done!

Most Zon players are not going to feel that their 34 inch scale instrument is lacking anything over a 35 inch scale Zon . Most end up liking it. Its not like whatever aspect of a 35 inch you feel is better will expose itself in any significant manner IMO. Wouldnt mind trying a smaller scale than 34 since it would play even easier and would probably sound just as good. The difference between them is probably splitting hairs.People like doing that....Fretting.Pun intended. The long held authority of 35 inch being the norm for good sounding B seems to not B :spit:a strongly held belief on this board and even with the people at Zon due to the attributes of a Zon neck .But like everything it is disputable and up to personal preference too.My gain tends to flex a bit of muscle or simply how the bass is played.

After playing a 34 inch Zon for seven months then trying a 35 inch scale bass I have no interest in going back to playing a 35 inch scale bass but do have much interest in trying a less than 34 inch scale Zon because people have reported great sound results and it would be easier to play.

I remember an interview with Gene Simmons where he said something that stood out to me as truth.It was something to the affect of "People are missing the point ,it doesn't matter if your using this amp or that amp the point is to plug in and play because really that is going to make the difference in your playing "

34 vs 35 inch thanks for the correction Addison !!
Honestly consider trying a 34 inch scale over a 35 inch scale with a Zon .I did not like the idea of it. Felt that it would be sacrificing sound quality.Ended up being too late in the build to change my bass but was very very happy with it and you could never get me back on a 35 inch scale bass now.

WOW!!!! This is the same situation I'm in at the moment but I haven't received my Legacy Elite Vl yet to determine if I'll like the 34" scale, Ive been playing 35" scale basses for the last 22 years and have never played a Zon so I ordered my Legacy Elite Vl sight unseen.

Your bass is going to be "THE BUSINESS" just the way it is and you will welcome the change. Talk to Zon customer service or Joe and tell them your concerns .It may be able to be changed or they might tell you what they told me. Short scale basses are gaining more attention and with good reason .I have never read anyone say they wished their Zon was a longer scale bass.People have said they liked the shorter scale.The reason I started on this topic was from your earlier post.Either way your bass is going to be a superb instrument !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iam sure if I sampled a bunch of different Zons mine would have been ordered a bit different. The salesman who helped me place the order for mine said the 5-2 was the way to go instead of the 5-1 but it wasnt his bass.
