I've always had a love/hate relationship with Zon basses. Parts of the bass work very well for me while other parts don't work at all. Consequentially, I've owned three and sold three. Then a while back, I heard and played my friend Andy's TJ5. That bass was glorious. The nicest sounding, solo bass I had ever heard. The die was cast.

Fast forward to last week when my finances aligned with the TB classifieds. A TJ5 became mine. :bassist: It's the only extended range bass I currently own (strung E to C). We're still getting used to each other but so far, it's been very positive.

It's good to be back on the Zon train.

Zon doesn't even advertise 35 in. as being an option for the Legacy Elites, I just ordered my about 3 months ago.

Yup, Legacy Elite 519. That's what I ordered. It's there.

They use different pickups (well, still Bartolinis but different) than the 34" Legacy. Joe describes them as "more muscular". Well, who wouldn't want that?

Okay I just looked at the Build Your Legacy Elite 519 page and there it is: 35 in scale w/ 19mm spacing.
Man I'm so stupid that I didn't see this when I was first looking at Zon Legacy Elites, I wanted a 6 string so it being 34 in scale I assumed the 519 was 34 in scale also so I just kept with ordering the 6 string, honestly if I'd opened my eyes a little better and saw that the 519 was 35 in. scale I most likely would have ordered the 519 instead of the Legacy Elite 6 string.

Since you placed your order (relatively) recently they may not have gotten too far yet. If you want to change your order it's probably worth talking with them about it.

Believe it or not this instrument originally sold thru Musicians Friend, and it is a custom of sorts with different pickup placement than the standard TJ with the neck pickup moved back towards the bridge.

The TJ is tough to beat for those who like tight string spacing.

Just keep in mind the Legacy's are already what I would consider a "neck heavy" instrument since the upper horn barely reaches the 14th fret. Having a wider neck will add more neck weight and more neck dive. Hence why the hyperbass, a play on the legacy body shape, has an extended upper horn.

Musician's Friend? Noooooooo! :bawl: I was told this may have been a 2008 NAMM bass. Either way, it doesn't matter; it sounds great.

Regarding the pickup placement, I read Damien Erskine was going to get a signature Zon. One of the things he wanted were the pickups next to each other and near the bridge. He didn't get his signature Zon but I have seen this pickup placement on a number of TJ's.

The neck pickup has a warm, beautiful voice soloed. Both pickups on though doesn't have the "scooped" voice like a bass with more normal pickup placement.

Regarding tight spacing, the bass I just sold had 14mm string spacing. This TJ5 feels like it has the Grand Canyon between the strings.

If for some reason you cannot change it to a 35" scale, and/or you don't end up loving it as a 34" scale (after you get it), can I call dibs? :D

If you want to see if it is definitely a 2008 NAMM bass, PM me the serial and I can tell you when it was made.

I think Damien did get a sig, but he then swapped makers right around the same time. He still has a fretless Zon with the same setup.

I would not be shocked if the bass is from that era, though, because 2007-8 is about right. I think mine was the first custom order TJ, and it was delivered in Dec '06.
