Official Zon Club Part 5

@JOME77 I just want to say how amazed and happy I am that you scored that bass. And owning it's near-twin, I'm blown away that someone would order it and then sell it - it is (for me anyway) the ideal fretless bass. I know, different strokes etc...
Glad you scored, amigo.

I have a Zon Sonus 5 coming in Tuesday, and I'm far more excited for Joe to be getting this fretless than I am about my beautiful Black Redwood Burl Sonus 5. This bass is a 40th anniversary gift from Joe's wife to him, so it's extra special. What a testimony to be married for 40 years! Also, Joe is a Roscoe guy deep down in his core, but several years back I talked him into trying his first Zon. As someone that appreciates great basses and impeccable quality they left an impression on him. When he told me he was searching for a fretless I planted the Zon seed in his head, as I know first hand Zon makes an amazing fretless, and boy did he find a GREAT one. No way JOME77 is getting any work done tomorrow. Might as well take some PTO.

Moral of the story.. Joe wouldn't be here w/o me, so he should send me the TJ5 while he's in Disney for safekeeping. LOL. :D

Thanks! I can't tell you how pumped I am about getting it!
It's definitely my dream fretless! I hoped to be able to find a nice Zon fretless but never really thought one so nice would turn up at just the right time!:)

It's due to be deliver tomorrow. I'll certainly post my first impressions and some fresh pics.

Jason,
All the above is true (except sending it to you while I'm at Disney :)). You totally started my Zon GAS. So glad that this was available when I was ready to make a purchase. If this one is any where close to as nice as the first blackened redwood Sonus 5 that I received 4 years ago I will be totally content! ..... And of course that 519 with the Gallery Koa top that we both (along with Chuck and Deon) shared wasn't a bad one either. ;)

I'm really getting pumped now. The bass just left the Atlanta depot headed towards Wonderful Robins GA! :bassist:

The Zon TJ5 is totally awesome!
It arrived with a bit higher action than I prefer so I lowered it a bit and installed a fresh set of DR Pure Blues Nickel strings (relief is perfect; very minimal; I prefer my fretless necks almost perfectly straight) . I'm sure that I'll tweak it over the next couple weeks but this thing has Mwah and growl for days!

Here's a quick and dirty sample of the sound on a soundtrack I recorded in Reason 9.1. It's a fairly short simple fretless part that repeats through the soundtrack (all fretted parts were done with my Ibanez SR5006). But it'll give you an idea of how the bass sounds.

Nice playing.

Sounds good Joe! Are you going to sneak it in with your checked bags tomorrow?

lol

Jason,
I'm tempted to! But I'm afraid that I'll get into trouble if I bring it (this trip is ALL about family time). The good thing is that Bass Central is only 30 minutes away from the house that we're staying in. I guess that I can always go there for a bass fix!:)

I'm an old timer in the Zon world; been playing and convincing others to since 2003'ish. Here's my latest.

Some you guys will probably get a kick out this ......

The only thing that kind of messed with my head on my Zon TJ5 fretless was the fact that it had side dots between the half-lines. I thought that it was a bit odd having them between the proper position markers. Some times when placing my hands in various positions (to play) I'd see the side dot in the corner of my eye and my left hand would instinctively go down in line where the side dot was and I'd have to slide up or down to be in pitch. Plus I thought that it was odd that some of the side dots looked a bit deformed (not really round and the same diameter).
Well it turned out while I was cleaning the bass this morning and rubbing the cloth on the side of the finger board, I rubbed off some of those side dots! lol
Apparently someone drew them on with some type of white grease pencil. :banghead:

I may have to gets some rub on side sots for the 12th fret (at least for a while) but overall everything looks a bit more in sync to me now ....... what a dummy! (yeah, me).:)
