Yes, he is. I first got to know Joe in 1997 when I ordered my first Zon bass from him, a Sonus Special 5 fretless.

This thread brought to mind my old Legacy Standard fretless 5. Still one of the coolest fretlesses I've laid hands on. Wonder where it is now...
Well I actually started talking to Joe in 1989/90 right before getting my first Zon from Gelb Music. It was a Legacy Elite 4 in ice blue metallic.
I wish I still had that bass!

I believe that I have the very first ever Zon Sonus Custom Special Headless 5! Woooo! This bass is absolutely INCREDIBLE!
PERFECTION is the only way I can describe it! This bass weighs 8 pounds even, and has no neck dive at all!
The tone is simply awesome with the 2 pickups centered, and of course there is a 3 band EQ to adjust with.
The bass plays itself, REALLY, just a dream to play!
My advice to anyone considering a ZON, just talk to Joe and get your specs right, and order the damn thing already! You will NEVER regret it!
A huge thanks to Joe and his crew! Awesome guy, awesome bass, I'm so happy I could cry!
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR and get a ZON! I can't wait for my next one!

I can't get over how light it is (8 lbs on my scale) yet how strong and powerful an instrument it is!
It balances perfectly with no neck dive at all, it's like playing on air!
It came stock with super low action with zero buzz, but I actually had to raise it a little cause I play pretty hard. But the fretwork is impeccable and the overall attention to detail is totally top notch.
Even the pickups, with the hidden screws, allow you to angle the pickups and set the height and then lock them into place, which is awesome.
The Bart setup is perfect for a graphite neck too because it keeps a warm tone. And the headless system is a snap once you understand how it works and is rock solid for tuning. It is very hard to go out of tune and intonated perfectly on a strobe tuner!
Zons are 5 star basses!
You could spend more money on another brand but you won't get a better Bass!

Got a Q regarding my Sonus Special Fretless 5. The bass has a 17 mm bridge; but the neck profile sure looks like it could at least take an 18mm bridge. What are my best options for an 18mm bridge? Call the shop? Look elsewhere? How good are Joe & crew with supporting older instruments in this way?

Good question. When I bought my Sonus Special fretless 5 I had Joe put on a 16.5mm bridge, and he was glad to do it.
Can't see how 18 would be different.

I got home and changed and played the bass for the first time. The 32 inch scale is very comfy. The super super low action is hard to get used to. I may raise it. Going from double bass to this is a big change.
