From THAT very website, i quote:

"Composite Necks

...The base material is carbon fiber, developed for the aerospace industry. Carbon fiber is rayon extruded under extreme heat and pressure, a process that changes its molecular structure on a subatomic level...."

"Wood Necks

...The wood necks for the bass models that come equipped with them are manufactured in our Redwood City, California, facility. Fashioned from hard rock maple, they’re profiled and shaped to feel and play like the favorite classics...."

So, no wenge. If its wood, its hard maple. If its not wood, then, well, it isn't wenge either. Not all dark coloured things are wenge.

Brief gig report. A tight 35 minute set at Dakota Lounge, part of a benefit for a local kids shelter. Actually closer to 40 as an encore was demanded by the full house. Great first gig with this band (both for myself and the female vocalist). Old school funk with a bit of acid jazz tossed in, mostly fairly obscure stuff.

The short story - the new Bubbinga beauty just killed. With the MB LMTube and Berg AE210, the bass cut through the mix like a hot knife, but totally supported the sound. Whoever noted that this pup configuration has punch was spot on. Only ended up using the fretless on the last tune (a funky version of "Love is Alive" by Gary Wright) and the encore ("What Have You Done For Me Lately" by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings).

Obligatory action shot

Great story man! Everywhere I play my Zon people always compliment me on the sound, and in the studio they are a breeze to record, just my Aguilar Direct box and it is ready to go...

I've got some Vinny questions.

How's the low B on a Vinny as compared to, say, a Sonus Special?
How's access up the neck? Looks good to me.
Has anyone here played a Vinny fretless? Comments?
Lastly, the Vinnys I've seen have set necks, but the Zon website says they're bolt on. Did that change?

I'll be able to answer these questions in a month's time.

Zon's kinda notorious for having differing specs throughout a line over the years (truss rod/no truss rod, electronics, set-neck/bolt-on, gloss/satin neck). If i am not wrong they used to be set neck, but now the standard option is bolt on. Counterexamples probably exist, as he's pretty ok with custom options.

The Zon i ordered, which should be here soon, is a fretless with a low B, and i'm equipped to do recordings.

I can answer a couple of the questions.

Access up the neck: All frets are entirely accessible. This is why I ordered 26 frets on mine in the works.

Set Necks: Yes. A Vinny I ordered back in 2002 had the set neck, but they are now all bolt-on. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe Joe might sway anyone looking for a set neck into the bolt-on. There's a reason he changed it beyond what is an apparent cost-cutting switch.

Actually, Joe would sway you the opposite way...he prefers the set-neck to the bolt-on, at least that's what he told me the multiple times I've been there.

I was a bit skeptical on ordering a Vinny without a BO neck for fear that if something happened to the neck, the bass was pretty much unsalvagable, so I held off on my order.

I now have one coming to me in a few more days and I cant wait to try a Vinny again. They are the coolest little basses out there!

Hmmm. Doesn't make sense to me as they used to be set neck. Why would he change the standard offering if he prefers the set neck? However, you talked to Joe and I did not. I guess it could be solely a cost cutting measure.

+1 - I can't wait for mine. I've got like 4-6 months to go.
