Thick skin, patience, etc... all of that stuff is well and good. I get it. But , is there a limit?

Let's run with TolerancEJ's analogy for a bit. Let's say you go into that fine restaurant, and you're told the meal is supposed to take 20 minutes. You wait patiently, and wait, and wait, and after 1 hour you know they haven't even started making the meal yet, at what point do you start to complain?

I don't know if the custom bass process is right for you.

Whenever I do place my order, I'll be happy to wait because in the end, I know I'll be blown away by the instrument. I might send an occasional message to ask about it but I don't want to push; answering emails/calls takes time away from building. Those who have already received their instruments, who has not received a high quality custom built end product from Zon?

I eventually would also love to own a Carl Thompson although I am aware the wait for those fellas is like 2 or 3 years.

Curious question: Those that are still waiting for their Zon. Did you already pay the item in full or just provide the 50% downpayment to begin? I wonder if they'd build faster if the bass was paid in full, upfront.

Has it gone triple the estimated build time?

I guess it boils down to them at least also supporting the process by being up front with how much things can slip if they run into hitches, to help you set your expectations and promote patience as needed, but I don't know exactly what they told you.

I'm generally super laid back about stuff like this, because I've been through this a lot and I know it's always gonna' be worth the wait, so as long as it's not ridiculous, like maybe 3-4x the estimated time with no end in sight, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I was being nice, but if you're going to complain that much about the build process, I have doubts that the instrument would live up to your expectations as well. Having been a bassist "a while", when people get this nit picky, it's just not gonna work out.

Well, first of all, while I've asked some questions, I think you'll find that I'm not complaining about anything. True, this is my first custom bass build, and I'm looking for information. I am 16 months into what was quoted as "about 6 months" when I placed my order. I'd hardly classify that as being "nit picky", and I'm certain that you can't derive anything at all about my expectations from what I've written here.

But, I have started to wonder whether my patience is going to be rewarded in this process. You know, the whole "squeaky wheel gets the grease" thing. I'm turning to this group for it's collective experience. What does it take to get your bass done? Is it simply patience, patience and more patience? Or, do you have to be a squeaky wheel to get on Joe's radar?

I have been and continue to be very patience with Zon, and have no doubt that the end result will be fantastic. I look forward to the day I can come on this board and sing Zon's praises. My questions are only to gauge whether my patience is helping or hurting the process.

FWIW, I've had plenty of custom "stuff" made (both musical and otherwise) so I'm very much in tune with the pro/cons of this kind of job. My questions are geared more at how to deal with Zon specifically.

I think that 16 months is too long, even for Joe. If he quoted 6 months I would have expected 9 months to a year. I think you need to talk to Joe or Mark directly

16 months? Wow. That's pretty atypical compared to my four experiences ordering custom from Joe. There must be a good reason.

In regard to "dealing with ZON", a phone call is the best way to contact them. Just understand they're on PDT, and probably don't get in about 10AM (1PM EST).

Thanks, guys. To be fair, I have talked to/e-mailed Joe a couple of times, and there are some custom things about this bass that perhaps warrants some extra time. I've tried really hard not to be a nudge, but I think I'm getting to the point where maybe I should try to turn the screws a little tighter.
