No takers/challengers?? Look up Mel Schacher pics. Is he or isn't he using a Zon currently? Definatly not the Grand Funk tone of old...surprisingly a more distinct, articulate tone, or not surprised if it is indeed a 4 string ZON.

Apologies for interrupting the more typical discourse on technical aspects and the beauty of our magnificent basses, but I am interested in OUR opinions regarding this.

OK..Now back to the usual...

Mine: ZON Sonus 6 custom fretless sn # 10001. Pics when I can get a camera, but I am glad my $$ went into my bass and related equipment instead of a camera. Later..zon6c-f.

Those of you that have ordered custom basses from Joe, how has his wait times been once you've paid the down payment?

Expect to wait about a year, depending on options.

But if Zon can make a 6-string model as a one-off, 19mm could be done in their sleep, I'd imagine... Ask them, or call.

Yup i would expect 19mm VB5s to be an option.

I ordered my vinny last December. Still waiting. I called them the other day to check on it and the guy who answered the phone said he would have someone find out and call me back. Still waiting.

I had to wait quite a while for my VB5. If I was going to do anything different, I would have contacted the shop less and just let them do what they do best, build basses. When it arrives you will forget that you had to wait. In my case, they were busy fulfilling NAMM orders. They also had to wait for the pickups to arrive. It will be worth it. Just make sure you have another bass to play while you do!

So call them back.

That length of time does not sound unreasonable or unusual- although they may have told you a shorter period, it usually takes about that long.

Sorry that my post made me seem distraught. I know ZON is a very busy small shop. As far as them not calling me back, I can totally understand how my message got overlooked. The bottom line is that I know I am going to get an awesome bass and the wait is worth it.

Mine took about 6 or 7 months... I also hate the fact that they almost never answer e-mails and sometimes they take a long time to answer calls but when the bass arrived it was perfect... the best setup I have seen on a bass... So, I guess it's worth it.

I'm with you, bassdaddy. I've been waiting *much* longer than you and communication from the shop is spotty at best. I'm doing my best to be patient for all reasons you've mentioned. Also, I know there has been legitimate issues (waiting for parts, etc.) but, at least in my case, the wait is really starting wear on me. A 50% deposit on one of Joe's basses is a-lot of cash to leave floating on a "vapor" bass.

It's not a vapor bass, tho I can see how it might feel that way after a long time.

IMHO(!!!), people really need to learn to have thicker skin on stuff like this when spec'ing a build, especially knowing they're dealing with a shop that is known to have communications limitations due to their size and workload. This is, and has been for a long time, a known quantity with Zon. No surprises here.

And the deposit amount should be of no concern whatsoever unless pulling the plug is a realistic outcome, but if you set your expectations correctly (see above) that shouldn't be the case, either, and the deposit is part of the purchase price, so it should be thought of as their money anyway... not money of yours that they're "holding for you" per se.

Again, IMHO! :)

With a shop like Zon, it's not a "vapor" bass. You know you'll get it. Search this forum for some example of *real vapor* basses and cabinets.
And once you get it, with Zon, you also know it will be what you asked for... and will exceed your expectations.

Thinking about restaurants, a similar example can also relate to basses. At one end of the spectrum, you can go to McDonalds, order & your meal is ready within 3 minutes. In the other end, consider a fancy restaurant; you order & maybe the meal will be ready in about 20 minutes because it's been prepared fresh & to your satifsaction. I would actually be a bit curious about a fancy restaurant that might put out an elaborate meal within 5 minutes.

I haven't ordered one yet, but I plan to eventually have a Zon VB6.

Thick skin, patience, etc... all of that stuff is well and good. I get it. But , is there a limit?

Let's run with TolerancEJ's analogy for a bit. Let's say you go into that fine restaurant, and you're told the meal is supposed to take 20 minutes. You wait patiently, and wait, and wait, and after 1 hour you know they haven't even started making the meal yet, at what point do you start to complain?

I can understand your frustration. Waiting is part and parcel of ordering a custom instrument. Joe and every other custom builder does their very best to meet deadlines. They, however, will not sacrifice the quality to do so.

As small builders they have also to rely on their suppliers. For example, Bartolini is also a very small company that builds custom pickups for many custom builders. Zon and everyone else is at the mercy of bartolini and every other supplier that they have. I had an MTD built for me. I chose the top wood. I had to wait till the wood was dry enough BEFORE he could even start the bass.

One of my Zon basses was held up 3 months just waiting for pickups. Another one of my basses was held up because a major label called and needed 6 basses ASAP for a major act.

Practicing the art of patience is a good thing. We should all do it more. Perhaps the best exercise is waiting for a new custom bass

Mike
