Do they ever answer their email?

I wanted to find out if there is a possibility of upgrading the hardware on the older basses. About the only thing I don't like on mine is the Schaller M4 tuners which have, I believe, a 12:1 ratio. I know it's kind of a funky footprint, is there such a thing as a drop-in replacement?

By their own nomenclature, it IS a Hyperbass- there are just two versions. Their website is not clear on this, as you can't price out the full version I hyperbass.

IIRC, there are officially 3 versions of the hyperbass. Version 1 is standard, no detunable bridge, (not sure if it comes with detuners on all the keys or not). version 2 is the decked out model with the detunable bridge and keys, and version 3 is like Manrings, which has blendable piezo sensors in the body in addition to the other bells and whistled. I believe that version 3 is exorbitantly expensive, if not entirely unavailable any more.

Maybe this question would be more appropriate for Joe Zon, however, I will go ahead and ask it. Many of the features of the Todd Johnson signature series Zon are welcome enhancements to the Sonus-style bass. Does that mean that we will not see these features (e.g. extended cutaway, lightweight tuners, pickup placement) in the Sonus line in the future?

Seeing as how it's a signature model, i don't think so. I am open to being corrected, though.

He has a four and a fretless five in addition to the six.

Sure they will, if you ask. You may have to pay for the options of course. But I have a Sonus 36-fret fretted with full cutaway and a single MM pickup with a setneck. If you ask, they'll let you know if they'll do it or not! But like with anyone, you'll probably pay for the privilege.

Can you post pictures of your 36-fret Sonus?... I'm thinking about the TJ because I have been using my Warwick Dolphin a lot these days and I've been missing that high A...:)

I only have this old, terrible iPhone picture from during a string change. It's a terrible picture.

Does your TJ have any neck-dive?

Thanks...

I ask as my TJ5 does have a bit, but not so bad....although I believe my neck is a bit thicker than their normal...

Yeah, it definitely has a little bit- but that is mostly because the whole instrument weighs under 8 lbs. It's such a small amount that I only notice it when checking for it- my old P-bass will do it so noticeably that I changed he strap contact points. My 11.5 lb Sonus 6 has no neck dive because the body is much heavier.

The top is an insane piece of katalox I gave to Joe. There was enough for four instruments, so there is probably still some available. It's amazing up close- tight curl figuring across the whole piece like flamed maple.

The frets are really tight up top and really can't be used normally. But up to about the 30th it isn't so bad. Beyond that fret, you'd need to invest some serious time to develop the muscle memory and dexterity in your left hand to make it useable with your left hand. I think it was more a joke feature than anything- it wasn't my idea! But the instrument absolutely kills- beyond words can describe.

I do not think I will ever make a living photographing musical instruments. However, here is photograph of my fretless Sonus and my VB5. For former is ash/bubinga top and the latter is ash/figured redwood.
