Buzz is prevalent on open notes only, so the problem area is a definite. I did look at the nut, but I'd be hard pressed to actually know if there is an issue. I was thinking of removing the string and stuffing a few layers of tape in there to see if it helps, just haven't gotten around to it.

I come from Warwick basses, so naturally I know that if I put in a half turn of the bass side grub screw, thus raising the nut a scoche, I'd be sittin' pretty. However, I've switched to a "notch-above" in favor of the "set it, and forget it" philosophy.

My local does have graphtech blanks, so if its as simple as swapping out and dropping $15, its totally worth it, as stated; best bass ever.

First fret could be the nut is cut too deep
Or just worn, but it's definitely a nut issue... not an issue a truss rod would be the solution for, and I'd be shocked if it was actually a fret issue. The frets don't move in these necks, but the nuts can definitely wear down. The good news is, replacing the nut on one of these, or shimming, is trivial for any decent guitar tech. Shouldn't cost much at all to have it taken care of.

I agree- if it is on open notes, then it's a nut issue.

The problem is, the nuts on Zon basses are actually adhered with into the neck. Modulus does the same thing. So a nut replacement is more labor-intensive than normal because it actually has to be sawn off. I'd expect it to be more than $15.

Are you SURE about that? I must admit, I've never had to pop the nut off one of my Zons, but I'd be surprised if they were held on with that kind of bond for the exact reason that it makes repair unnecessarily difficult, and it doesn't really need to be adhered that way to function properly. I'd email or call the shop on that one. Thing is, he may wish to get a nut from the shop anyway. I'm not sure how easy or hard it is to get a carbon fiber nut like that.

i would highly recommend calling zon over emailing them, or else you are potentially setting yourself up for a bad customer service experience with a _great_ company...they always answer the phone and are quite personable, and you just may get joe himself, however, if you send an email...well, just call :D

The nut on my Sonus looks like any other nut on any other bass. I doubt the aero glue is used on this particular part. I have to ring the shop for some new nuts/bolts anyway, might as well pose this question to them directly too. I also need the press-on top to the concentric treble knob too... Heck come to think of it, black hardware would look much better against the red than the current chrome... Does Zon sell hardware direct?

Actually, it's interesting- I went and looked, and I have two Zons with a bonded nut, and two with floating. The two with floating are the newer ones. So you're probably fine.

Modulus still does it that way, though.

Carbon fiber nuts are easy to get (it's just sheet CF cut into pieces, and you can order it that way from a number of different places). However, the even easier route is calling Zon. You can get all that stuff directly from them if you call.

Sweet. I have no idea what year my Sonus is (one of the q's I happen to have for the shop.) But I'm 100% positive this nut is not.bonded, I can clearly see where the neck stops and the nut begins.

Do the newer Zon basses come with a truss rod? Or is ths just the import/Mosaic lines? (Speaking of the import lines, where exactly are they imported from? I've been eye-balling them online for quite some time now.)

New ones do come with a truss rod, yes. You can have one retrofitted to your older instrument for ~$600. If you give the serial, depending on the year I can tell you the date. Is it quite old?

I've seen some sold on here as "not having a truss rod" that were new enough to have a truss rod, just that they hadn't looked.

I'm not sure, but I think it may still always be an option. The truss rod equipped necks are much heavier than the standard necks, and I think the standard relief built into the standard necks is probably about right for most people.

Every single one I've seen lately has one. I'm sure you could ask for it without one though.

+1 Always call Zon! Emails almost always fall through the cracks. It's a small shop with a handful of employees and they are busy building intruments not sitting at a computer.

Just got off the phone with Zon, and they're sending me all the little small replacement parts I need for my new love, FOR FREE!!! Way to go for good ol' American customer service, thanks Zon!!!

In all my years of experience, I've never talked to a company that cared so much. I was even instructed on how to fix my fret buzz. I've said it three times this week, and I'll say it again, I'm a Zon player for life.

Awesome. Say what you will about their email responses (which ate definitely patchy), but Joe and Mark are awesome guys and will always make sure you are taken care of.

I'm also a Zon player for life- mine are incredible and I couldn't imagine NOT having them. I'd put my 5 string up against any instrument- it just has that mojo. Its insane.

Agreed. I'm already putting money aside for one of these babies:

And of course I'm still eyeballing those sexy imports too...

...with the burl top though, of course. =P
