Here is a detail of the VB5.

This is a detail of the redwood top and the phenowood fingerboard. The grain on the board is one of the most striking aspects of this bass.

I have had the VB5 for about two years, maybe a bit longer and the Sonus for almost 10. When I ordered the VB5 I sent the shop a picture of the Sonus which has a fairly plain bubinga top. I told them that both bases had to get along but that I wanted a more exciting top for the VB5. They came up with the figured redwood top that you can see in the image. Both bases, do look great together; contrasting but similar in some ways. It was a very exciting moment to open the gig bag when I received the bass. I would also recommend the matt finish. I prefer it to the high gloss finish on my Sonus. The VB5 is strung E to C. Like the TJ, chords very high on the neck are perfectly in tune and sustain for ever. The harmonics are very clear and the bass stays in tune remarkably well. I took the bass to a recent Michael Manring clinic at Pinnacle Music and at the end of the clinic Michael had a few moments with the instrument. He did say he really liked the bass!

Does anybody compared
the VB4 with single coils and the one with humbuckers ???
Thinking about ordering a VB4, but not sure about the pickup option...

Thanks

Both are great pickup options. I believe Michael Manring has always used single coils on his two VB4 and they sound awesome. I would have no hesitation using the single-coil pickup option. I only ordered the humbuckers because I had a Pedulla bass with Bartolini humbuckers and I was curious to see how they would sound on the VB5.

One observation I have regarding the Vinny-style basses is that the character of the instrument really seems to change as one goes from 4 to 5 string (I have never tried a VB6). The neck on the 5 is much more massive and rigid.

I do not think I will ever make a living photographing musical instruments. However, here is photograph of my fretless Sonus and my VB5. For former is ash/bubinga top and the latter is ash/figured redwood.

Beautiful.
I`ll order one like that (but 4 strings) someday.
Why do you prefer that finish over the lacquered one ??

I definitely prefer the satin finish over the high gloss, too. It feels nicer on the right forearm.

I personally love the look of gloss finish.
I used to own 2 Sonus with that finish and those beautiful tops looked stunning on them.

I agree that satin feels nicer, but IMO you loose a bit of beauty. Will be a hard choice by the time I order one.

I didn't believe my eyes, until my wife confirmed this....
We saw Grand Funk R R perform weekend before last, at the Villages Ampitheater, in Fayetteville, Ga. Even though we were on the back row, it's a small venue, but we both recognized the over-all shape of a Zon Sonus. We agreed from the headstock and logo lettering on the headstock, that Mel Schacher was using a 4-string Zon Sonus. Sadly, his SVT's distorted on some lower register passages. It was not a B-String, but within the range of his E-string....I KNOW IT WASN'T HIS BASS, as it was otherwise articulate, which also confirmed to our ears that Mel was using a Zon Sonus with a pick. If we are wrong, I can take being corrected.

Later, y'all...zon6c-f.
