It's my first custom order from any bass builder, and i am JITTERY. I suppose it gets better once you have a few custom basses under the belt, so to speak.

I send them one email a month asking for updates. Sometimes they reply, sometimes they don't, i'm ok with that. I'm cool, i'm cool, but i'm also a broke student, on summer break, and my hands are itching, i tell you.

First of all, you are SAFE with Joe Zon. SAFE. You'll get a fantastic instrument. Trust that. Being in Singapore, I can understand the problem though... my automatic recommendation for folks trying to get a response from Joe's shop in email is to call, but of course that would be hard for you with time diffs and cost.

So here's the deal... since the only real practical way for you to get in touch with them is email, give it a few more tries, but if you have something really important you need a timely response to, let me know via PM here on TB. I'll call them on the phone and ask them to look for your email.

I have removed the neck the day after I received the bass to perform a massive cleaning of the instrument and I hadn't noticed anything special.
The instrument is solid dark grey so you cannot see anything under the paint.
After your post I have been struck by curiosity and have removed the neck once again.
I scratched a bit of paint, which goes halfway into the neck pocket and YES!
There is a reddish wood top :)
So it's not a Sonus standard with custom pickups placing, but a Sonus Special painted grey (which is not an available option).
This instrument must have a story of its own, I'll mail Joe Zon to see if he remembers anything about it :)
I was a happy camper and now I'm even happier :)

When I asked Zon about a serial number months ago, they gave me also a figure and an acronym

MSP stands for "minimum sale price" but MSRP ?
Can it be the manifacturer's suggested retail price for the production year ?

That is surely a Sonus Special. Very nice instrument. I asked my uncle Gerry who played with Savoy Brown for years about contacting Zon. He said you have to call. They are such a small shop and so busy it's easy for emails to fall through the cracks. Most of the time Joe answers the phone.
I know my uncle played his Zon on the last live Savoy Brown album and it sounded huge and they hardly had to mix that album. I believe he played a 519 back then.
I have a used for one day 5 string set of Nickel Ultrasonics for sale in the accessories area if anyone is interested.

I got 2 audios recorded with my Sonus fretless (played by my former teacher) that I`d like to share.
They sound terrific.

Since I don`t know where to host them, can anybody host them for me ?

Well, it seems that there IS a new Zon in my future, but not a Vinny. Looks like a modified fretless Sonus Custom Special is in the works. Now comes the waiting... :D

Modified in what way? I had a Sonus Special fretless and I thought it was pretty much perfect as it was. :)

Vic, I have your old Sonus Special, and it is pretty much perfect (listen to the track I posted about 3 pages back - hard to beat that tone!)

I just wanted a different kind of perfect :D

The custom special is mahogany or guanacaste rather than ash body (still with the bubuinga top) and the "custom" soapbars placed in the "special" position.

Well, seems to be I`ve finally been able to upload the files.

These are 2 tracks recorded with my Sonus Fretless played by my former teacher.
He rarely plays fretless so it took him 3 months of practice to get the sound and intonation he was looking for.

Although they`re not properly mixed yet, they sound terrific IMO. Great example of the sound this bass can achieve, in the right hands :)

Woah, that WOULD be another awesome fretless sound!! :D

It's a really good combo. My 5 string has a guanacaste body, and it works really, really well with the neck.

I've also played the guanacaste/katalox special w/ soapbars that was at Gelb for a while. I thought about buying- I would've if I hadn't already had a similar instrument on the way. Great combo, but it was a fretted, of course. Did you ever get a chance to try that one, Kesslari?

I didn't - but I heard about yours :D
I thought about katalox for the top but I just really like bubinga.
