oil change

No interest in sending oil out for analysis. The intervals I use are based on my 30 years as a pro wrench.

Hideous idea.......I live on sand as far as one can dig and have well water. I put mine in old anti-freeze and simular jugs, drop off a auto parts store. I don't care if they make money off it, restaurants make money off my bacon's grease and I'm not asking to take that &%^*&() home either.

I'm in the milage between changes club...roughly 5k, sooner if I'm going on vacation or other road trip.

I've read that you should never put additives in your oil, but I'm not a mechanic. Basically, the article I read said that your oil has already been formulated the way it's supposed to be and that additives undermine that - or at the very least waste your money.

On the contrary, many long-haul truckers do exactly that. They send in oil for analysis at regular intervals, but otherwise run the same oil and change filters. They change oil only when the analysis shows that it's breaking down. With synthetics that can push 100K miles.

It should be noted that extended highway driving is easy on oil and on the vehicle in general. Driving short trips in town is especially hard on oil and vehicles.

Thanks everybody, I went to my local autozone and they take old oil, my old man is visiting me this month, we both spend couple of hours yesterday changing the oil, rotating tires, air filter , talking and drinking beer, of course my dad was telling me the " right " way to do things. Love that old man.

Long haul trucks also hold 40 something quarts of oil versus the 4 or 5 quarts most passenger cars and light trucks hold.

When I was a high school student I had a summer job where I worked with a guy who claimed that changing oil was a scam. He had an old full size van that he drove and he said he had never changed the oil. I never thought to ask if he ever changed the filter. I know the van had over 100,000 miles, but I can't remember the mileage any more.

Its not a scam, oil gets dirty and burned with the time losing properties. Changing oil can be cheaper than changing strings in your bass so make yourself a favor and give regular maintenance services to your car.

I've used Mobile 1 in my Jeep for almost 90k miles now. Changed every 5k-6k miles in my driveway. In fact, it's getting done tomorrow. Just got a Fumoto Quik Valve installed too, this will be my first oil change with that sucker.

My wife's car I take to a quick change joint. It's just easier. But she's selling it, I think I'll start changing hers in the new car now.

My new vw told me I can do all the maintenance I want, just keep receipts
