I think we were talking about how there's always someone better than you, so don't be discouraged - rather be inspired.
It doesn't matter what genre you are in, the same thing applies.
Then some of us old farts got all judgmental because we can't get our heads around the example given and new music. (I think the example was actually tongue in cheek) But we can't really expect music to stop changing just because we don't like the new stuff. I'm pretty sure Black Sabbath sounded like noise to my parents.

- What did Jamerson write? What did Chuck Rainey write? What did Jack Casady write? The list goes on...
- Jaco's "theme song" was The Chicken - he didn't write it.
- Who played it that way first? That's the important thing.
- That material impresses people but doesn't represent Jaco's real contributions to the art of electric bass, any more than Blackbird or Yesterday represents Macca's.

- Fast is not the point at all, as demonstrated by the OP's video. You can be tone deaf and play fast. We don't evaluate greatness by how fast somebody plays. (At most it might be one aspect of judging the chops of a great player but it's by no means the most important factor.) Nobody's going to remember the guy in the OP video.

You mean those bass lines were all written out for them before they walked into the studio???
They wrote those lines based on chord progressions.
Continuum and Portrait of Tracy are NOT representative of Jaco's bass playing??? I disagree.

There are great players, and there are great composers and it's two different things. Some great players are also great composers, others not so much.
And vice-versa.
And I'm sure (at least I hope) you know that a tremendous amount of great jazz and almost all blues and classical music is covers played by great players/great interpreters: A great interpreter is a great artist/musician even though they may never have written/composed anything on their own. "Songs they wrote" has got nothing to do with it.
Lines that you play off a song in the studio are not "writing" or "composition" - it's improvisation. If you take a line that you came up with and build it into a self standing piece of music, then you've "written" or "composed" something. That's English. If you're using a different language, please give advance notice.

Tech death players can take pretty much everyone to school. They combine musical depth with speed and often multiple techniques. Many of them often play different styles and use this style to push the extremes. I don't necessarily like Rings of Saturn, but bands like Decrepit Birth, Obscura, Rivers of Nihil, and Black Crown Initiate blow my mind.
Got it. I'm not on here to quarrel either. But I do have opinions and sometimes if it's about something I think is an important point, I will get into it.

I read her father is a bass player - she started playing when she was three - probably grabbed Daddy's ax and started imitating him - definitely an unfair advantage...
I know Macca's dad was a jazz trumpet player and Jaco's dad was some kind of band leader. Lots of others too. We do have "musical families" out there. It's interesting - I guess it's genetic to some extent, and also growing up in a supportive environment

Improvising is a form of composition . And inventing or "composing" a bass line based on a chord progression is certainly writing.
Interpreting any song in a new way and inventing a melody in your solo is again a form of composition and writing.
In fact, legal interpretation of copyright laws has stated the above many times.
You are simply wrong if you want to continue to argue otherwise.
Anyway, I think you might be missing my original point entirely.
I was only trying to convince you that you don't need to be as technically proficient as that young girl in order to invent or compose something special.

As for the solo- awesome, but as with most playing like that these days I wonder, what floor do I get off the elevator?
Technically great playing but I would rather compliment a simple, great song, than wank away to crap... Not being sour grapey here, i just think that it's a waste. Horrible song. Maybe there are people out there who genuinely like it but to me it sounded like gargled noise.
Even Big Dumb Face (look for them, their one album is actually mildly entertaining, but crap music ) could be considered Beethoven compared to that IMO :/
