Just pointing out that if someone having a flawed character means that you can't get excited about their playing, then that encompasses 100% of musicians past, present, and future.
Nice track, but that doesn't sound like Anthony Jackson. Definitely more Alphonso Johnson.
Fair 'nough. I should've chosen my words more carefully than "flawed character", but rather those "particular flaws" in his character. FWhateverIW, here are a few players that inspire me musically and otherwise... Milt Hinton, Charlie Haden, Eddie Gomez... Charles Mingus was known to be a bit temperamental, and yet he inspires me as well.
Certainly there are different tastes whether food, fashion or music; those tastes can't always be described with, or derived from, reason. Perhaps I was looking for a reason as to why AJ's playing doesn't "do it" for me. I have several of his solo albums and other recordings that he laid the low end on. I saw/listened to him perform with Hiromi Uehara recently and ...
... I'm going to see/hear Anthony Jackson again tomorrow, with Wayne Krantz. I hope AJ's playing excites.

Which albums were Alphonso Johnson? I'd particularly like to know about their 1971 album. I tried to embed "East" off of that in my last post but it wouldn't work for some reason. I think that track might be Alphonso.
Sounds like a bad day perhaps. I met him at a Michel Camilo show and he was beyond nice, very quiet and well spoken. He even complained about getting lost and using his ear to get out of the mess!
Since that time, I have worked with some others who work with him regularly and hear wonderful things about him as a person. But, he cares about music tremendously with a very intense focus, which can come off differently I guess. Many musicians are quirky (dare I say most?), but one can be quirky with no ill intent towards others or one can be a devious, self serving person, and that sounds about the opposite of him.
Anyway, I hope to get to speak to him another time in my life.
I also remembered one of the things he said to me. I asked him how he has been able to so much work maintaining his very distinctive style and not giving in to trends and compromises. He replied basically that he has done many sessions where you'd Never know it was him and that he had to do what was told to him. For me, that tells me that he knows his role as a professional and that at times it is not to innovate.

VERY YES! I believe "Whatcha" was one of the first contra-bass range recordings. I read a great interview about the giddy/surreal feeling he had setting up his main bass for low tunings and the relief/satisfaction when it came roaring through the monitors!
That'll do it- I've never understood the negative troll mentality. It's like a little kid acting up to get attention. I've always found that being nice gets me all of the attention I'd want (which is a lot of attention- so I have to get up early in the morning and start doing nice things for people).
Anthony Jackson has one recorded one album with his name as leader where he played music written by a Greek bassist.
I'll have to dig out the CDs I have, I thought he was the leader on more than one. My mistake. Okay, I stand corrected. I have ONE solo album, that I got him to autograph. When he was here with Wayne Krantz he completely ignored two fans who'd bought his CD, didn't even acknowledge they existed.
