Okinawan sanshin build

They are more low profile and won't be hitting against anything. Or snapping.
They probably work better than the other ones too.

I think those classic tuning pegs will work just fine. And they really complete the look. I don't think it'd look right with lopro tuners.

I agree with hammerhed. As long as I get the fit right, I don't think they'll be a problem. I think there's a reason why they haven't bothered to change that design on sanshins. They work the same way as violin/viola/etc pegs work, they're just longer and there's lower string tension. Plus, it just wouldn't look the same without them.

I seem to do the same thing, work on several projects at once, or none at all. I'm not sure why.

This is shaping up nicely.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's getting worse for me. I decided to join in the build challenge on TDPRI and it starts in 1.5 weeks! AND today someone asked me to make them a bass when I'm done with that. By worse, I just mean more insane. I'm glad to be doing it. :)

I just discovered this thread. This looks like a really cool project

Glad you found it. I'm hoping to get some more work done on it soon.

I worked on shaping the peg head today. A little more left to do, but it's getting pretty close. I couldn't get the rounded-ness of the end to really show up in the photos.

I cut the 22.5 degree angle on the body pieces too. I set the bandsaw table to 22.5 degrees and used the back of the featherboard as a fence to make sure to cut straight lines and have pieces the same length where they need to be.

I'm not sure exactly what method I'm going to use to clamp these. Any suggestions? I'm thinking if I can find a 1/2" dowel rod, I should stick it through the two holes in the body to keep the holes lined up while gluing. Other than that, I don't know.

After the body parts are glued up, I'm going to cut it into somewhat of an oval shape.

I'm also thinking I probably should put a brace along the centerline of the top to support the bookmatch line and to also keep the bridge from making the top cave in.

Also... the claro walnut for the top isn't flat. Does ironing with steam work for that? It's only about 5/32" thick.

I ordered some veneer softener, so hopefully that will help me flatten out the walnut and some other thin wood I have.

I got the body glued together. I was imagining I would be a little more stressed while doing this, but I think it worked out. I used one of the straps that held my dad's old boat on its trailer to wrap around the wood and tighten it all together.

Hello, fellow Hafu.

This is a pretty cool build. Subscribing to watch how it comes out.

Thanks for watching! Sorry I have to ask, but does Hafu mean "half"? :)

Pretty cool instrument - so percussive. In some ways, where it goes melodically reminds me of some surf guitar riff-age. Maybe it's just me tho...

subbed!

I'm only used to hearing the more traditional songs on it, but there's been a lot of cool videos posted in here with some different stuff. :D

"Hafu" is a Japanese loan word from English, which, yes, means half... but specifically refers to those of us with one Japanese, and one non-Japanese parent. In my case, my mother's family is from Hakodate, in Hokkaido; my father's family is from Tucson.

Until my grandfather died, I spent summers with my grandparents in Japan, and later, I studied in Chiba. Because of the... social stigma... of being Hafu, I'm glad that I was mostly raised in the states.

There are some amazing cross-cultural things being done these days... the Yoshida Brothers, for instance, or Jah Wobble and the Japanese Dub Ensemble.

That's what I was thinking, but had to make sure. :D

We lived there until I was 1.5 years old, then moved to Michigan and I've only been back occasionally, only for 1-2 weeks at a time.

I'll have to look into them, thanks for letting me know!
