old school tone, but portable

Wow, the first Ampeq B200R I bought did have a problem, so I took it back to GC , they even offered to give me a loaner Fender 250 with 210s, until my replacement B200R, came in. It only took about three days. It's been going strong for over a year now, with out any problems. I've been playing three to four gigs a week with it & I've never had any problems . Plus it has a five year warranty, & the weight is really not an issue, because it comes with wheels. So it rolls real easy, & I've got a real bad back. I guess you got a bad one.

The B200R is 44 pounds & comes with wheels, not 50 pounds & over. I have major back problems, so this was a major concern of mine, before I bought this amp . I really like the Mark Amps, but I was not crazy about their price tag. I checked a lot of deferent amps out before I bought this one. For the price , tone, & portability . I really like this little combo amp. I can throw my gear bag & my bass case on top of my little combo & roll everything out to the car in one shot. Now if I was going for a head & cabs , I'd go for a Fender all tube head or an Orange head, with Bag end cabs. No disrespect bro , but I notice that you have an SVT 5 Pro . They're made in China also, & the reviews I've read about the SVT 5 Pros, say they have some minor flaws also. Sometimes you get a good one, sometimes not, but with a five year warranty, I'm happy.

I'm sorry, I didn't catch about the three flights of stairs. In that case, you might want to check out the Phil Jones Brief Case Amp. Their pretty small, & light amps. I don't know a whole lot about them, but what I've heard is good. But I don't know about getting that old school sound that your looking for through, it though. I guess you could take a pod with you, & run it through the amp. That might do it. It's almost like you need a 115 & tubes to achieve that tone. Kind of like the old Ampeq B15s, I think that's right . You guys know, the 115 cab on wheels , with the 4 latches on the top , & you flip it over & there's the head with all the tubes. Isn't that called a B15 ?

Honestly,

I meant no disrespect about you B200R. I was merely stating my experience with made in China Ampeg. Also, my SVT5PRO is 3 years old and made in the USA.:hyper:

The 3 flights of stairs is really the biggest factor here. If I were you, I'd be getting the lightest rig I could and then I'd make it sound old school. Get either a pair of Wizzy 10's or Epi UL110's and then a lightweight head. Then there's these new Mojo Sonics http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=439606#post5810614

If you need 2 ohm capable then get the Focus or EA micro300 (if you can get by with that). If you only need 4 ohm capable then that opens up the MB LMKII and the GB Shuttle. Get a Sansamp Bass Driver to fatten up the tone and you have old school.

Even the Wizzy 12's weigh 29 lbs (a pair is 58 lbs) and the iAmp 500 is 14 lbs. That adds up. I used to play in Boston and the guys place was up a few flights of stairs. The Wizzy 12, iAmp 500 and my URB was a bit of a bear to lug up and down the stairs.

I guess how bad it was depends on which level the B15 resided. Mine lives in the basement so I have one flight to negotiate. I've found that if I remove the head and carry the head and the cabinet separately its not too bad. Still 3 flights is something else.

The townhome was three levels up and no basement. My music gear was on the top floor.

aka worst case scenario;)

It's the same reason I can't recommend my Ampeg B100-R, as much as I love this combo. Excellent old school amp. I honestly think it improved on what my B-15's did.

Wow that is indeed high praise. I'm curious in what way did it improve on the what your b15 did?
