imo rics are ok, seems like it tries to accomplish that ray sound but just kinda falls short

The 4080 double neck is no longer made. You can buy a used one for $3000 to $5000 on ebay.
In the good old days Rickenbacker was a more customer friendly company that made some interesting instruments. But these days they discontinued several models (like the 5 and 8 string basses, doublenecks, fretless basses and more) and don't sell as many spare parts as they used to, and the prices are higher and the is a nasty back log on their instruments.

It is...he primarily used this instrument live for the song "Xanadu". He played the guitar chord outro on guitar and the bass line with his Taurus bass pedals while Alex soloed.

whats the appeal of a Gibson? or a Peavey T40?
Ricks just sound great and unique IMO. Plus they look pretty cool too. My favorite bass. But still I was thinking of getting a luthier to make a copy or get one used. Way too pricey and way to long of a wait.
Also to the person who said they try to imitate stingrays? You know the Rick came first and it actually sounds quite different.

Oh I know. I think my question might have been misunderstood. I didn't mean for it to sound sarcastic, I apologize. I was more curious about how they sound and how the necks are and such. I was looking for a little insight on /just/ what makes them so special if someone could describe it.
