One Bass Player You Think Is Underrated?

Alan Baculis. Seen here playing in a Montreal jazz bar. Guy is incredible!! I've seen him live a few times. Played in a band in the late 80's, and through the 90's named Bootsauce. I don't understand how he's falling out of the spotlight. YouTube a track called hold tight. Near the end is a mind blowing solo doodle! Dude gets no love!!

I didn't expect to see Al mentioned here. He's a great player. Rhonda Smith used to tell me about him (and how good he was) back in the mid 90s and since then I've seen Al play countless times. He's a killer; can keep things in the pocket all night and then rip a tasteful solo. He's playing this year's Montreal Jazz Festival with the band in that video (JAMAD).

DEFINITELY Rick Haynes from Gordon Lightfoot's band. I NEVER hear anyone ever mention him. He has a great midrangy thick slightly distorted tone that gives his slides and licks grunt and heft...he is SUPER underrated.


Gordon himself sounds bad in this clip, but Rick Haynes sounds GREAT! Check out his slides and embelishments...and that tone! Great great great...

This is bound to get some argument started, and they're not influential, but I do really like how their bass fits in with the rest of the band - Mark Stoermer (Killers), and Mark Wilson (Jet)/

Ben Orr...
Yes his lines were simple, but he could play and sing it live exactly like the original Cars recordings.

Having seen the cars "back in the day" and on both their Rundgren and Ocasek reunion tours (the latter with bass being played via keyboard by Greg Hawkes) I can tell you his playing and singing were SORELY missed.
You would think on the Rundgren tour that an excellent bassist like Kasim Sulton could nail Ben's simple, steady playing, but he was absolutely meh. Kasim also managed to murder the vocals on 'Drive'. Greg's keyboard bass on the Ocasek tour was steady, but sounded sooooOO synthesized, was often an octave low, and was also WAYYYY too loud (bad DJ loud).

Ric was the brains, Elliot the musical perfectionist, but Ben was the backbone AND soul. There is no Cars without him.

No yeah I'd go along with that. I actually consider Ben an influence. That cool riff he played on 'Bye Bye Love' left a mark on me as a kid and made me pay attention. Great player /singer.

Dusty Hill/ZZ TOP. Just take a listen to those first albums. The songs "Heard on the X", "Balinese" and " Nasty dogs and Funky Kings" are prime examples of what I'm talking about.

Steve Severin. Near the very opposite end of the spectrum to a lot of typical bassists but his lines were original, memorable, and his writing and production input was integral to a very long standing and succesful bands career.

Nate Mendel. He plays simple lines a lot of the time with almost no effects which labels him an underrated bassist but truthfully, his lines fit the songs he plays.

My choice for most underrated bassist would have to be Ron Blair of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He's a solid, in the pocket player with impeccable feel and time, and with serving the song as his top priority. Playing bass in a Petty tribute has made me appreciate his playing a lot.
