One Bass Player You Think Is Underrated?

Andrew DuPlantis (sp?) played with Son Volt, but now plays in Tia Carrera. David Wm Simms from the Jesus Lizard. J.Robbins in Goverment Issue. And I just dont se Tim Bogert name enough.
I have to agree that Dywane "Mononeon" Thomas Jr. will change a lot of peoples perceptions of bass. He is flat out amazingly talented. Subscribe to his page. he has tons of videos.

My underrated list includes Dee Murray of Elton John's band in the 70's, and Aerosmith's Tom Hamilton. Dee was one of my first Bass influences, and still is. IMO Tom Hamilton is really creative, but you have to listen closely as he's also really solid. I also feel the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman is underrated. I really dig his playing.
Ever notice that people respond positively to a bass part when it's way up in the mix?
IMHO, any bass player in a band that 'made it' that doesn't get some respect is under rated. Two examples are Gene Simmons and Niki Sixx. Not to say they are great players, but they made it and most of us didn't. I don't think we need to idolize them, but I don't think we should be talking trash about them either.
I think that it takes a certain amount of talent to 'make it.' The original question was "I wanted to know if any of you out there know of a bass player you think is underrated and deserves more credit than he/she gets!" I pointed out a couple of bass who 'made it' and get bashed a lot on TB. I posted what I think. YMMV.

You can make it with a modicum of talent if you're in with the right bunch. As long as you show up and play the right notes, you can do very well. That doesn't make you underrated. It make you lucky.
To my earlier point -- that is a very pedestrian part. it's just really loud in the mix.

I do agree it's not the most technically complex line, but it works well with the song, and I quite like the "solo" part. Is it something incredibly impressive and complex? No, but it does catch my attention (albeit that might be because it's so loud in the mix like you said, so you kind of have to pay attention to it).
