One Bass Player You Think Is Underrated?

The one thing these threads do is to show everyone what type of music you prefer and how old you are.

Saying that, my pick for this question will ALWAYS be John Klingberg. He played with Van Morrison for a time in the early 70s and is best known for playing bass on the Moondance album. IMHO, this album features some of the best bass lines ever recorded. Especially the walking bass line on the title track!

I don't think this will reflect my age as I really didn't listen to Collective Soul till I had to learn a few of their songs for recent auditions, but I'm really digging Will Turpin right now. Solid and plays what needs to be played and not much more.

Tommy Stinson.

Formally of The Replacements and Guns N' Roses f ok 98-14. His brother Bob shows him how to play roundabout at age 11,and Tommy took it from there.Has a great attack,can play balls to the wall. When he took over in GNR he did those already awesome basslines from Duff justice. It's those punk rock roots

When I knew him/them, he was known as Jody Spampinado...1972/73...

One of the 3 Bassists who opened my eyes...shaped me as a bassist...

More young bass players should be so 'blessed'.

Been listening to "Oranges & lemons" all day long, so when I got home I learnt "Mayor of Simpleton", which you can hear here in an excellent cover by our own TJH3113.

I didn't really know anything about XTC until I watched 'This Is Pop'... a Rock-ribbed documentary about the boys.

I'm just totally taken with the band!

Bunny Brunel. Possibly the first guy following Jaco to really carve out a distinctive voice on the fretless. He is a very serious player. Massively underrated despite being truly fantastic player.

Gary Willis (formerly of Tribal Tech, Wayne Shorter, Allan Holdsworth etc). He gets very little coverage relative to his ability and part of it is that he is a very low key guy and also that he has been living in Spain for years now.

Willis is incredibly deep, and grooves like a beast. Just listen to Hipmotize from his Bent CD for inspiration..

Paul Jackson. I discovered him on a Herbie Hancock album; Flood. He is so funky and his playing is so crisp. I'm totally digging his in the pocket grooving. Especially on the tune "Butterfly".

Wikipedia just told me that Kevin O'Neal was responsible for the very nice bass playing on Young MC's "Know How"
