One racist remark?

Not trying to start an argument here, but head on over to the Fox News website and read the comments under ANY article if you want to get the picture that conservatives are racist/homophobic/bigoted/Islamaphobic/ or whatever else you can dream up.

Funny law in play:

Not only would I have quit the band, I would have been a lot less nice about it than the OP was. Associating with people like this holds no interest for me, and by doing so you are condoning this behavior, especially since the person repeated it, and apparently made it very clear what his views were. Every time I think society is moving in the right direction, I hear about something like this. It's 2015 - I can't fathom how anyone could still think this way(not there was ever an excuse for it).

So stereotyping republicans is OK, but not other groups of people? Interesting perspective you have there.
SR1200 isn't stereotyping Replublicans, FOX is.

you should have told the audience EXACTLY why you would no longer play with that band and walked off stage. It would have gone viral and forced the other band members to either support or dump the new and offensive member of the band. Effectively ending their, or the band's career.

You would have been hailed as a good person with high moral integrity. And any band that approached you would have no doubt as to your stance on racial superiority. Win, win, win for you.

Or more likely be regarded as an unprofessional, unreliable, loose cannon and be effectively shunned by the local music establishment.

Any other transgressions by the new guy? And you didn't discuss any further, just shook your head and then quit? Truly no other reasons to quit, you wanted to stay in, but just 1 n-bomb by the new guy and you quit without discussion? I don't get it. And I'd probably let you quit too if I were in the band. I don't need someone around who's going to throw in the towel over something like that.

The situation had other problems, but not anything like this. The intent of the hate speech was to intimidate and embarrass me. I would have stayed if it hadn't happened. I always gladly try to work out band problems when they are in a reasonable context, but I don't have time to waste discussing the kind of behavior this individual showed.

...If I were a long standing member and I knew/trusted that the others in the band shared my philosophy in racial issues, I'd be discussing the removal of the person who made the comment. If I thought that the comment was reaching approving (or even indifferent) ears, I would be walking myself...

It was quite clear from a couple years of working with the band that if the others had heard his remarks, they would not have batted an eye.

This person sounds like he was trying to get under your skin. Is there some previous circumstance that led him to it. IOW has the topic come up before? Was there any reason for him to poke a stick in your cage? IMO you should have stayed and told him to quit.

Get over yourself. The "N-Word" has nothing to do with color, except to certain (generally poor and ill-educated) black men. They have taken it as their own, as a way to call everyone else "racist," and be offended so as to justify their own poor behavior. It isn't, it is simply descriptive of someone who is narrow-minded and arrogant without cause. Yes, this can describe many black men, but that doesn't mean it applies to all. I have many black friends and acquaintances, and also know several "N-Words," most of whom are not black. Yes, racism is real, yes it sucks. No, you shouldn't be offended by that word, IMHO. If you are one, then it applies to you, so you can't be offended. If you are not one, then it isn't true, so you can't possibly be offended.

Fair enough, the last straw is very different from "I quit because of a single remark made by the newest member."
