One racist remark?

What is politically correct BS is the oversensitivity of quitting a band, then coming online to boast about how you were so offended, making a big deal out of a little word.. What a bunch of babies.. grow up.

Ok. I guess that asking for others opinions means I have to hear this, too. BTW, I was not boasting. I was angry and still am that people have such sick attitudes. If that makes me childish, fine.

Like I said in an earlier post. Some countries recognize racial hatred for what it is: a crime. Come to Australia and use the N word. I dare you.
Lol.. So the answer to name calling in Austalia is what? A beating? Thanks for the heads up.. Not that I use the word, but if I'm ever in Australia I'll be sure to only call some rich the name so afterwards I can sue the crap out of them for assault.. LOL very mature..

greg you are so full of it. to actually claim you don't know any racists means you actually don't know a single person. sounds like your life is full of acquaintances.

Sounds like he was testing you out to see if you were offended.

If you'd have said you were not offended then he knew he had the opportunity to really let loose on the hate speech.

I had a guy in my band tell an offensive joke about women on stage. And he got called out on it by a few people in the crowd. And he tried to keep up with them. And he lost big time. It was soooooo uncomfortable in there afterwards.

I quit because of a single remark made by the newest member. To summarize it, he referred to U.S. President Barak Obama as an "n-word." This was during setup for a rehearsal when only he and I were in the room. He showed by his voice, body language and facial expression that he knew I would be offended. The other band members never make political or religious remarks to me, but I know they are very conservative. One guy works for local FOX TV affiliate. The man who made the remark is a long time friend of the guy who works for FOX.

. . . .

What I am wondering is if I should state explicitly my zero tolerance for hate speech when agreeing to work with a new group of people?

Yes. Before taking any job of any kind, ask if anyone is a conservative or a friend of a conservavite and also make sure to ask if anyone has anything to do with Fox Network or is friends with someone who does. If the answer is "yes" to any of these questions, then definitely become offended and refuse to work with them.

Being in a band isn't the most important thing in the world to some people. Was OP supposed to just suck it up, knowing that even though he couldn't stand to be around someone who would think nothing to spout such a remark, he should stick around for the good of the band? I'm getting the sense that he wasn't bound by any major recording and touring contracts, so leaving a band of that caliber isn't the worst thing he could have done, especially knowing the inclinations of certain members. I would also extricate myself from any situation that offended me if I could help it, which op obviously could.

There's something else that shouldn't be discounted here, and that is the complete lack of common sense that one displays in uttering such racist crap to another person who they don't really know from Adam. This band member had no way of knowing whether OP had any black family members or friends but said it anyway. The guy is possibly more stupid than he is racist, which is another good reason to bail.

Sounds like you're over thinking this issue. What's there to be sad about? F those narrow minded fools! Just move on. :)

Sad? Yes, I didn't want to hear offensive stuff like that from a person in the band. I knew the BL was not going to help. Reflecting on it now, I am glad that I did quit.

In a band I play with, the singer/frontman was a bit drunk one night and used the word "******" on stage. I seethed. Afterwards, I told the bandleader that I would not put up with this kind of speech. Next gig, singer apologized profusely to me, and until our most recent gig kept the boozing to a minimum. But while propositioning a woman in the front row (he's married), he took pains to assure all of us that his wife would not object. She is, as he explained, "very liberal" when it comes to such things.

Another PC response! People shouldn't tolerate it..lol *** are you going to do about it?
If you want it to stop., don't give it any attention. Ignore it! Stop being a P**** , and laugh it off to ignorance.

ignoring the problem makes it go away?

hardly.

I would much rather call that person ignorant to their face and let them know that society is leaving them behind in droves. But feel free to continue to surround yourself with truly awful people.

Get over yourself. The "N-Word" has nothing to do with color, except to certain (generally poor and ill-educated) black men.

What? There is a root word that means 'black' that was twisted into an insult a long time ago. The root word in Latin is 'niger'. The root word in Spanish is 'negro' - (NAY-grow). The statement above is the wrong way to be colorblind.
