OOoooOoo Creepy ghost story from a skeptic..

We have friends not far away in France, that live in a house built on 1073. That's right, 1073. They are the third owner. It was in two families until 10 years ago.

They have regular sightings of a gray animal in the kitchen/dining room area. Always out of the corner of their eye. Don't know if it's a cat or a dog. They've seen it 30-40 times each.

That's a very interesting story, Relic. Very interesting.

Is there any chance your friends could send you some pics that you could post here?

I'm glad the first words you posted are that you are a skeptic.
I'm pretty skeptical of certain claims too, but it changes once one witnesses something for themselves!
Not that seeing is necessarily "believing", but it sure helps when it is witnessed with a group of people.

I was telling my wife your story last night. As I was ending it with the bit about your son's experience, our house went black. Power failure. I went outside to access the basement and noticed that the neighborhood was out as well.

Spooked us all.

That's a weird story, Relic. Just plain weird. You have to witness stuff like that to make you wonder how and why. We don't have the answers to everything. I wish we did.

I keep wanting to spend a weekend in Turin, Italy. It's only 3 hours away. It is often referred to as the City of Satan. There are catacombs under the city and there's a famous intersection of tunnels known as the gates to hell. It is situated below a church. I'm sure there's some interesting sensations down there.

Relic...my two adult daughters were freaked out by your story.

I've had a few happenings in my house since I moved there in '91, but it's really been very far and few times.

I live alone and one night I was watching TV and heard someone walk from one end of my kitchen to the other. Heavy footsteps too.

Once while in my basement I saw a rectangular shaped box rock back and forth a few times. Nothing was even close to the box that could have fallen that made it rock the way it did.

well, this has all creeped me out pretty good right before bedtime.

i gotta say, relic, you have started some interesting threads this week.

Sooaahhhhh ... what did you folks have for dinner that night?

this is what i was wondering. group hallucination due to bad food? maybe someone dropped acid into y'all's dinner?

on the other hand, there is your youngest son. is he in any programs with his peers this summer? those little kids are far more clever and devious than we generally think. they use the cute and innocent routine to their advantage, believe me. could be he has learned from his friends how to really mess with you guys.
;)

Funny this should come up...

A couple of weeks ago, I had the scariest optical illusion caused by my next-door neighbor walking past my window.

I still have no idea exactly how it happened.

I have foil over the windows in the bedroom to keep it dark so I can sleep days, but over time, there are little holes and tears in it that can cause some interesting camera obscura effects and peculiar shadows.

When he walked past the window, in my darkened bedroom, there appeared to be a three-dimensional shadowy figure in full size not on the wall, but walking through the center of the room.

It was the most creepy thing I think I've ever seen, and I have no idea how the illusion happened. It was nothing but the jackass next door walking around, but this bizarre figure he created in the room would have scared me shirtless if I hadn't known he was doinking around not far from my window.

Stuff like this must be behind lots of haint experiences.

A search on Google throws up quite a few French properties dating back to the 11th century. I think it is definitely possible. But I agree it'd be cool to see some pics!

Could electromagnetic disturbances and related EM idiosyncrasies of the area where your house is provide an explanation?

http://warforscience.wordpress.com/...sightings-part-3-electromagnetic-disruptions/

Especially considering the recent spate of solar magnetic eruptions, etc.

They never see it straight on. When standing in front of the stove or sink in the kitchen, they'll see something gray flash past, to their right. They'll turn and look and not see a thing. If they're in the dining room, they'll see it enter the ktchen. It's always out of the corner of their eye. Never seen it directly.

About a year after they bought the house (it's actually a friggin chateau with two of the four turrets standing), they were visiting friends and they were telling them about their new home. At one point someone asked them if it was haunted and had they seen any ghosts. They both said yes at the same time, turned and looked at each other in shock (and smiling because they had never talked about it before) and one asked the other, "are you talking about the dog?"

Since then, they see it 5-6 times a year. Sometimes less. Sometimes more. Everytime we go out there and overnight, I ask for the latest on the sightings. It's no longer a big deal. They both offer up their latest and move on to the next topic.

When he quoted you, MIJ-VI underlined the words "built on 1073". I think he's asking to see some pics of the chateau and not the ghostly "thing".

Not sure if you wanted ghost pictures or house pictures. Here's a house picture taken from the side of the house. One and a half turrents remain. The place is huge and at one time had 27 people living in it. It was abandoned for 200 years after it was attacked during the French revolution. During this time, a tree grew in the middle of the ruins.

It's a magical place in that you realize that you don't actually own the place. You are simply given the opportunity to maintain it for the next people.

It's beautiful indeed!

One last bit about the house. There was a saint that was born and died there. He lived to be just over 100 years old. He was born in 1100's. To put this in relative terms, life expectancy back then was 40-45 years. In today's terms, that could be the equivalent to living to 200-250 years. Now how accurate is record keeping from back then?

They are restoring the place and keep finding stuff. The recently found five pairs of shoes that are tiny. They have researched them and believe they were from the 1500's. The place is amazing.

RELIC....apologies for the hijack.

One very last comment. Everytime we go see them, we over night. Copious amounts of wine is consumed. Each time we get to that last night mellowing out part of the evening, I can't help but reflect on the fact that people have been doing just that in that dining room for over 1000 years. How tall were these people? How many descendants are spread all over the world? So much history and world events while that magestic building stood solid. The place has such a comforting welcoming spirit to it. You feel safe in it. You feel welcome. And I'm sure there are all kinds of spirit activity in the place that I'm not aware of. But it has such a positive vibe to it.

HIJACK OVER...Sorry Relic.

 The sense of history there must be awesome--and humbling.

EDIT: I've deleted my previous post as it proved redundant in light of the developing context of this discussion.

No wonder it's haunted.

Thanks for that. I just emailed it over to them. They'll get a kick out of this.

Puts another perspective on it, doesn't it?

It was abandoned for a period of time longer than the existance of Canada.

Funny, how by North American standards, a 70 year old house is considered old and worth tearing down.

And folks (of European ancestry) here in North America think we have a long history... :rollno:

haha sorry about that!

Turin must be amazing. I explored a lot of places like that in my time in Europe, mostly in Eastern Europe - catacombs, castles, it's all very amazing.
In fact, I had one very memorable experience in Poland one time where I came across the ruins of an old old castle in the woods. It was very early morning with a fog covering the woods like something out of an old dracula movie.. I sat down among the ruins (just walls actually) completely alone and sort of felt the history of the place. It's difficult to explain, but it was almost a sort of trance where I just closed my eyes and imagined all the souls who lived there in years long passed and in a way I could almost "feel" their presence. I'm sure it was all in my head, but an amazing experience nonetheless.

Great map, but hopeless for Medieval navigation, what you really need is one of these:

Round, flat, with Jerusalem at the centre and Noah's Ark above & to the left a bit... the world in 1285 as depicted in the Mappa Mundi in Hereford Cathedral.

Back OT, a guit I used to know in Taunton (Somerset, not Mass.) lived in a standard Victorian/Edwardian red-brick house above a shop. A couple of times there I saw a brief blur as though something had shot out of his kitchen & dived up the stairs. He saw my double-take & asked, then said that he & the Mrs often saw a cat at that spot. His dog (a classic Lassie type) was completely unfazed though.

I give some credence to the "Stone Tape" idea - that local conditions can 'record' an incident & then play it back ad infinitum, like the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed], but I don't consider that this covers all incidents.

To quote the Bard:

"And therefore as a stranger give it welcome.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Hamlet - Act 1, Scene V

Oh, & Relic, in light of what your neighbours are up to, try to steer clear of Ray Bradbury's short story "Free Dirt". :D

Pete.
