OOPS I Cut my Finger Off

Right now I'm recovering from losing a pretty good chunk of flesh from my right index (plucking) fingertip pad. I was really worried when it happened (caught in a slide of a shotgun, first time shooting sporting clays), but it looks like I haven't lost any feeling and it should heal just fine, maybe with a scar. I recall reading an interview with Chet Atkins, he was talking about how much he loved woodworking, but gave it up because of the risk of losing a finger.

Sorry about your finger man...

A guitar player friend of mine had a riding lawn mower roll on him as a teenager. He said he just stuck his hand up and pushed it away, rather than the spinning blade fall on him, and it cut the thumb off of his right hand just above the lower knuckle, the one by the web of his hand. He can still hold a pick but it looks funny. It looks like he is making the "four" sign with his hand when he strums. He is a dentist and says it makes it easier to work in peoples mouths without the thumb. But when he grabs things it's really awkward looking.

I would look at him all the time and say "Hey man, gimme a high four!" :smug:

My relatives tried to cut cows horn, one of them was cutting and other one was holding its horns. Cow moved its head and well, my relative lost his finger. They could not find it, and now he has piece of gardening hose attached on what remained of that finger lol

See page one, post 19 for how and why.
It's going to work but I don't know how long until it can bear the the pressure.
I also built up a pad on my middle finger right at the knuckle crease (underside) from sliding flat on the strings.
Mildly painful and stiff slow to bend at the tip now. No doctor wants to remove the pad.
That pad should get some serious talk about how to avoid such pads and other finger damage from bad fingering techniques.

So you'll have a one year warranty on it I can see, sounds like a good deal... Now what happened to the other ones, they have rectangular patches of skin? :woot:

Two friends lost their fingers. One had an engine block fall on them, the other in a meat grinder.

I cut my hands often enough when using a box knife that my wife made me buy a chainmail glove. Also good if you play metal.

Yeah - tried these during my prep-chef gig - you don't get cut cause it's impossible to handle the knife & what you're cutting!

Monday Sept 17, 2018 I cut my left index fingertip off at the base of the nail , got it sewn back on and now it seems to have feeling by Thursday 20. So I wrote a ditty.

I picked my finger up and I stuck it back on.
The doctor sewed it up but it's not quite as long.
At least it still works and attached to my hand.
And nothing's gonna stop me when I play in the band.
Lmfao :):D:laugh::roflmao: Great!

Give me a number then. Cut off my right index finger at the first joint most of the way (hanging by the pad on the palm) as a kid. Was whittling with an old-school Scout knife, stabbed, and the blade folded up with my finger inside.

It’s a little stiff in the winter and I still favor plucking with my ring and middle fingers, but it’s really better functioning than I deserve.

Done - you just need to add a picture of the injury to this thread to claim your number!

Hahaha, sick. That sucks dude. Hahahaha, (sigh) wel, it could be worse I guess. Could've been two fingers, or half the finger, or something. Right? Good to see it doesnt stop you from playing though.

Pretty easy to lose part of a digit... I know 2 guys who have... one's a drummer so he gets by (saw accident)... another guy lost it in a snow blower (northern living!)...

Remember, with a snow blower that has been shut off to clear an obstruction, the engine can still have compression in it... he reached in to get an object out, while the snow blower was off, and as soon as the object was moved, the pressure/compression still in the unit jerked the blade, severing the fingertip. Thankfully I don't have to use saws on a daily job basis, but I am suuuper careful when using my chop saw, chainsaw, etc for home use. Love my fingers! All of 'em!

I lost about half of my left pinkie in 2012 - took it about 3/4 of the way off just between the first and second knuckles. They sewed it back on and it's still not as quick and flexible as my other fingers, but you can barely tell it was ever gone.

Glad you're making a speedy recovery and writing some new hits in your downtime!

I did the same thing on Monday of last week. Only just a slice of the tip of my index finger on the fretting hand. I was disturbed by it for a day or two but it's been healing up nicely so far. I have put a pair of scissors in the kitchen instead of using knives to open packages. For a while I wondered if my bass career was over....but it appears it's not dead yet.

Good thing I had no gigs this week!!!
