OOPS I Cut my Finger Off

See page one, post 19 for how and why.
It's going to work but I don't know how long until it can bear the the pressure.
I also built up a pad on my middle finger right at the knuckle crease (underside) from sliding flat on the strings.
Mildly painful and stiff slow to bend at the tip now. No doctor wants to remove the pad.
That pad should get some serious talk about how to avoid such pads and other finger damage from bad fingering techniques.

Monday Sept 17, 2018 I cut my left index fingertip off at the base of the nail , got it sewn back on and now it seems to have feeling by Thursday 20. So I wrote a ditty.

I picked my finger up and I stuck it back on.
The doctor sewed it up but it's not quite as long.
At least it still works and attached to my hand.
And nothing's gonna stop me when I play in the band.

Back in college, I was using a retractable utility knife to cut along side a yardstick. The blade hopped up on the yardstick and mowed through two of my fingertips (right through the nails) that were holding the yardstick in place. Blood everywhere, I went into shock. Some hall mate saw me in the bathroom, took a look at my finger tips, wrapped them in a towel and told me he was bringing me to the ER. The doctor had me place my hand in a bowl of something (rubbing alcohol?... hurt like hell), had a couple assistants hold me in place, pulled out a needle, gave me shots in my fingertips then stitched them up. Today there are no signs of trauma, residual pain, etc... I was very fortunate that I had a "guardian angel" to help me out. I hope the same outcome for you.

Trouble is the fit. Lindsay Buckingham. I think by now he is over Stevie Nicks, he was hopelessly in love but her fuse just didn't light. I read he suffered depression and had to leave the band.

Thanks baileyboy , the waiting is the hardest part. I often feel the urge to grab a bass and play something but can't. Better watch out for those fingers.

In the fall of 1969 (10th grade), while carving a pumpkin I cut about 1/2 - 3/4 of the tip of my index finger (fretting hand) off. I played guitar and bass at the time, but when things where healed enough the darn guitar strings got caught up underneath the fingernail and it was painful and bleeding a bunch, so I concentrated on the bass. The stings were bigger and did not get caught underneath the nail. For about a year and half I would be leeding by the third set.

We need to start a club for this. Bass players with damaged digits club!

Give me a number then. Cut off my right index finger at the first joint most of the way (hanging by the pad on the palm) as a kid. Was whittling with an old-school Scout knife, stabbed, and the blade folded up with my finger inside.

It’s a little stiff in the winter and I still favor plucking with my ring and middle fingers, but it’s really better functioning than I deserve.

Ouch! Glad you were able to save it!

I was like the woman in the Au4 In Just Three Seconds I'll be gone song.
I felt something odd about that song, looked at the lyrics, then decided I am where she was.

This is cheating but those who know can play the game with the dumb.
I love this band.

In Just Three Seconds I'll Be Gone
Lyrics: (Intro)

Here’s a story…
Here’s a story…
Here’s a story about a girl I once loved
And I’d still love her if she was still around.

It felt like yesterday but I’ll say once upon a time
There was a girl who was far more beautiful
Than did her any good.

The amazing thing about it is she had no idea.

And nor did she feel compelled
To notice such things in others.
She just thought that’s how the universe worked.

What she failed to take into account
Is the foundational self interest
Of all sentient beings
And that’s when it all came…
(Well for her anyway)
That’s when it all came crumbling to pieces.

(Verse One)

She was a girl who
Never thought,
Never guessed,
Never got.

In spite of all the life and love
There was to go around.

Beauty, purity, liberty, symmetry, serenity and energy
Are only for the ones who pay the price with others blood
And throw…

Down.
Steal that crown,
Taking that slave,
Spinning that head around.

You get it,
They get it,
He got it,
I get it,
Those people got it.

But bless her heart she never even stood a chance in hell.

(Chorus)

Oh when I came here I was lost and forgotten
Until then the sun rose in the dawn.
And I just meant to stay forever here running
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.

(Verse Two)

She was a girl who
Never thought,
Never guessed,
Never got.

How many tears it took to take
The wretched tyrant down.

You get it,
They get it,
He got it,
I get it,
Those people got it.

But bless her heart she never even stood a chance in hell.

(Chorus)

Oh when I came here I was lost and forgotten
Until then the sun rose in the dawn.
And I just meant to stay forever here running
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.

And I can’t remember my name. It’s forgotten,
And they all told me I was wrong.
‘Cause I just meant to stay forever here loving
But in three seconds I’ll be gone.

They are one of those bands that slip through the cracks. Relatively simple arrangements but very clever in order.

My father played guitar in the 70s. Lost his ring finger on his fretting hand while trying to clean off a lawn more blade. He could never make it work after that.

As much as losing a digit sucks, and I'm glad OP is in good spirits, it could be worse. It could be Katherine Kieu worse.

By way of encouragement I offer this: about 20 years ago I dropped a 30-pound rock on the tip of my right index finger. Ripped out the fingernail, tore open the tip of the finger and smashed the bone into three pieces. It was hideous. I was sure that at worst I would lose the fingertip and at best end up with a misshapen and possibly useless finger. The doc sewed it up, bandaged it and told me to wait. Within about two months the finger looked pretty much like it does in the attached photo (you can see the faint line where the tip was ripped.) A bit of numbness but full functionality.

The healing power of the human body is pretty impressive.

My Grandfather lost the tip of one of his fingers in a mangle (oldschool drying device that squeezed wet clothing between two massive rollers). Apparently his mother sewed it back on, and stuck it on backwards the first time around. Of course she did all of this with a needle and thread!

Honestly I don't know how true any of that was, but he did have one funny finger that was much 'splodgier' than the others and had a visible join line running round the base of the nail. It stopped him ever playing the violin, which apparently he wanted to do.

Like many musicians I worked in food service for a time - catering prep chef, and the kitchen's main chopper. Unfortunately, I was unprofessional and had lousy knife skills.
I'm lefty but I play bass righty. Luckily I cut with the knife in my left hand - so when I sliced my fingers (again and again and again) the right hand (picking) was the victim, IMO better than the fretting hand.
My bandmates would laugh at my bandages and say: "It must be busy season for caterers!"
