Opeth....

How many people here on TB are into Opeth?
I just recently began listening to them. At first I wasnt very fond of their lead singer growling (never been very much of a fan of growling), but its grown on me!
Went to one of their shows last saturday and they rocked pretty hard:bassist:
Their bassist Martin Mendez was amazing!

I also managed to get hold of a pick from the lead guitarrist :D

So...any Opeth fans in here?:ninja:

I think there's been plenty of discussion in the Recordings & Bassists sub-forums.

They're my favourite metal band. I got onboard at Orchid and have followed them all the way to the present, when all the other metals bands I was into have fallen out of my favour.

If you want to hear some truly great bass, get their second album, Morningrise. Johannes de Farfalle literally got sacked because his style was so up-front, and that's not what Mikael wanted.

Definately. Martin Mendez changed the way i approach bass. Growing up with Flea and Les Claypool as my bass gods, i thought that was the ultimate. But Mendez's intelligent use of simple structures one minute, then wanging it the next, so different yet quite traditional. Simple root fifth root runs, pulsing quarter notes, cool but difficult to play long runs following guitar. If i had the talent to play anything i wanted, opeth's class is the top of the list.

Personally I think that Beneath the Mire (from Ghost Reveries) has one of the most well written bass parts I have ever heard. It's not necessarily my favorite or the hardest to play, but it stays simple and is a perfect example of bass complementing a song not being the focal point.

The damnation album had some great and tasteful bass parts too, but Ghost Reveries really was their best work and is also Mendez's best work.

Their old bassist was very very good too, check out the morning rise album, blows my mind every time!
