Opeth

Martin is an awesome bassplayer, but I kinda like the style of his predecessor (Johan DeFarfalla) better.

Mikael cracks me up with his stage presence. He talks to the crowd like he's fronting a smooth jazz ensemble or reading on NPR.
It's the polar opposite of how most deathmetal frontmen address the audience. I saw them in Dallas about 6 years ago and everyone kept comparing them to Rush :eyebrow: - I kept telling those people to check out King Crimson - way closer

Ghost Reveries and Blackwater Park share #1 spot for me from Opeth. I went through a phase, like I have with 4 or 5 other bands, where I listened to almost NOTHING but them for 3 or 4 months.

I saw them live once, at the Marquee in Tempe AZ with Baroness and High On Fire in October '08. Fantastic show. Mikael is one of my favorite frontmen of all time.

I'm partial to Blackwater Park with Still Life a close 2nd. The new DVD I'm not totally in love with like I'd hoped. Yes, musically I think they're on top of their game. Martin and Axe slay (kinda miss Peter still - life goes on LOL).

I also think Mikaels "clean" vocals sound better than ever, but don't like his growls on there as much as previous stuff.

But hey..it's Opeth! How can you go wrong :bassist:

King Crimson? :eyebrow:

Hell, if Opeth is similar to any old-school prog band, it's definetly not the Crimso; it's either Rush or Camel.

I've wanted to get into this band for a long time. I recently bought Blackwater Park, Still Life, and Deliverence. I cannot wait for them to come in. Before I only downloaded a couple songs to see if I wold like them, needless to say, I did. They are becoming my favorite band. They mix the Brutal Death Metal riffs and vocals with smooth breaks like you would here in Pink Floyd. They are great!!! :bassist::bassist:

Having seen these guys 6 times and meet them 4 of the 6 I would definitely say they are the best. They are amazing musicians, super super professional but yet fun and down to earth and man are they nice. To call them inspiring would be selling them short. I am most hooked on Blackwater Park and Ghost Reveries but all of their work is in a word amazing. I wouldn't be the musician I am today if it were not for this band.

This popped up on my Netflix suggestions:

haha awesome

I remember the first time I saw an Opeth album, Morningrise, in the record store (remember those?) metal section. Probably around '98 or so, and had never heard of them. They were still pretty obscure then. I was looking it over and noticed there was not a single song under 10 minutes. The balls on these guys, I thought, and went ahead and bought it to check it out. I remember thinking, this better not suck, I haven't bought a CD without hearing it first for a long time and have been burned by crappy albums before....

It did not suck. :D

Yeah, that PRS is pretty sweet! I have a question about the new DVD at the Royal Albert Hall. I noticed Martin playing a bass I havent seen him play before. It's the dark gray jazz style bass. Has a matching headstock with a jazz PU and a MM at the bridge. Also doesn't seem to have any fret markers.

Anyone know what that is? It sounds awesome!

It's one of his custom Sandberg's. I believe its a California JM.

I've heard of the band over the last few years but never sat down to listen to one of their records a few months ago. Now I love them and can't stop listening to them. Every song is a journey.

Definitely one of my favorite metal projects by far. I've seen them live and thought that they were simply amazing. I've gotten quite a lot of non-metal heads on Opeth (mostly Damnation :P).
I don't know that I could pick a favorite album overall. Each one suits a certain mood, and I have a lot of memories associated with their albums. What's fun is to try to just sit and listen to all of their studio albums, in order, beginning to end. I've only been fortunate enough to have enough time to do that once, but it was flipping awesome. Especially since I have them on vinyl...
