Opinion on an MTD endorsement

Well, the issue is my friends are still in upstate NY and I moved south many years ago. i have spoken with each of them and they rave about the product. The newest one told me he never had a bass come out of the box and play so well. Perfectly set up. I trust them. The few I have played are in Sam Ash stores. I liked them but they were out of my budget at the time.
The string deal is also a very big thing. I can always use a string endorsement. I beat the hell out of my strings.

Maybe I can help ya out. lol

Thanks for this. I agree. As a family guy/dad/weekend warrior, it's sometimes tough to budget for gear. Especially in today's economy. All of it helps.

I am currently talking with the endorsement contact about what they are offering... and I believe I will take them up on this. Proudly.

If you can get the same bass (or equivalent) in equivalent condition (i.e. new or like new) for the same money, used, what have you really gained from this endorsement? You're not really getting anything you didn't already have (i.e the ability to buy a bass like that for that price) but you are giving them something. Even if it's just taking on an ethical obligation to play that bass and talk it up.

After the first time you play a brand new bass, it's just as "used" as many used basses out on the market. If the OP stands to get a bass for a price that is cheaper than what he could get the same bass for in like-new condition, but used, then it seems like something to pursue further. But, at least for me personally, there's no way I would pay more (or even as much) for a new bass - and take on the obligation of an endorsement deal - than what I could get a mint, used version of that same bass for (and take on no obligations). Even though it's a discounted price, that doesn't necessarily make it a good deal. There's nothing magical (or even of value, in my personal opinion) in being the very first person to officially own a particular bass.

Of course, if they were going to do something customized for me, that I couldn't ordinarily go and buy (particularly used), then that's a different story.

Would they still offer you the endorsement if you had neither the $$ nor intention of buying one of their basses? If you don't currently own one, how can you be photographed playing only their bass? Seems like you would have to put money into the deal to hold up your end of the bargain.

Now if you were in the market for a new bass(es) (and could be swayed to buy their brand and got a discount), then by all means. It's not a deal with the devil. I mean it will end at some point.

I'm a musician... When are we not in the market for new gear? lol

I don't see a downside to the deal. I actually received the contract yesterday.. and even the photograph end of the deal is minor. It's not an exclusive deal either. My end is not much at all. It's supporting them and promoting them. Which I would do either way.
