Opinion: Precision or Jazz 5 string?

I'm standing at the verge of getting it on with a Fender fiver.

Any advice re P or J?

Seriously though, you don't really expect people on the forum to tell you which bass YOU want to get.

I'll just get this response out of the way: try both and find out which you prefer! Now that we're past that, I chose the Jazz because I figured the extra definition from the bridge pickup would be helpful on the B string, and I've found Fender's stock P-bass pickups have slightly "blurry" lows to begin with. So, while I like P and J basses just about equally in general, on the five I think the J was the right move. It's an outstanding bass.

But I have tried the Precision V, and it's great too.

I have an MIA Precision V, an MIA Jazz Deluxe V (fretless), and have had a MIM Jazz Deluxe V, and all have been great basses.

It really comes down to the sound you prefer and the way each feels, until you can afford the other one and then finally have both. If it comes down to asking here which you should get because you can't decide on your own for whatever reason, then flip a coin. Seriously. Either way, you'll end up with a great bass.

I'm more of a Jazz bass guy, but if Fender still offered the Big Block P V from a couple years ago, I'd consider it a great deal.
there was one for sale in classifieds not too long ago.

After years of playing P bass based basses (funny) I got my first J bass and I love the two pickups and the tone you get with the two volume and one tone control. That's the one plus a Jazz bass has over the P.

I'd get a P and have it routed for a bridge J pickup, but I can understand not wanting to do that to a new bass.

I'm more of a P fan when it comes to Fenders, which is the reason I chose a Precision 5-string. But I think what Nedmundo says above holds a lot of water, and if you could only have one, I think the Jazz may have more to offer in the way of versatility and having a sound more traditionally associated with 5-string bass.

The solution for me is to eventually have one of each...I love the neck on these!

I think J basses are more versatile. I do Love the P-Bass' sound, but J basses get their own classic tones and more [IME/IMO]

What do you like, the P sound or the J sound? I own a '08 MIA Fender Jazz V and it's one of the best basses I've ever owned. Sounds solid, articulate, punchy, you can't beat it when it comes to a Fender.

But it's up to you to decide, if it were me I'd go with the Jazz V.

I honestly prefer the precision, but really, you're talking apples and oranges. XD

They both have pretty good builds, I would suggest trying them both out, or at least finding whether you prefer the meaty punch of a P-bass, or the roundness of a J

Man, I Agree!! I also have a '08 MIA Jazz V Oly white and it is THE RULE! Vintage Tone with Modern Feel.My other basses are going to the classifieds!
