opinions: 210 and 115 modular rig vs 410

I voted for the 410 just because I like the sound of 4 drivers all being the same size. Either my Ampeg 410HLF or my new Avatar B410 NEO sound great with either of my heads and have more then enough bottom for anything I play. At 57 it's getting hard to justify moving the HLF around anymore but the Avatar at 65 lbs is still do-able for me. I own a van so size isn't an issue. If I had to go for portability, or I drove a sedan, the 210 + 1-15 probably wins out.

Up until recently I ran 2 x 210 cabs and was content with the sound. I then bought an Eden D115XLT and stuck that under one of the 210s. Well the other 210 has been sold and I am ecstatic with the sound. What I did find is that the 115 "blooms" further out from the stage than the 210's did. You can really feel the bass 10 rows in from stage now. You need to watch this when setting volume.

Just also have to watch the ohmage.... I have a WT-550 and the 210 is a 4ohm cab and 115 is an 8 ohm. This is a 2.67 ohm load on the amp and equal power to all drivers. From my perspective, if you have an amp that supports down to 2ohms I highly recommend this setup as opposed to 2 x 8ohm cabs. The 2.67 ohms really taps the speakers and you get some serious air moving.

I chose the 2 cab set up, even though I have always preferred 10's and no longer use 15's. As an old fart of 54, I no longer lug larger cabinets around, and almost always use just one Genz Benz NeoX 210. When I do need more volume/projection, I add an Aguilar 212 to the rig and run 2 ohms @ 500 watts.

Another thing to consider is the 410 cab you are using, or looking for. The Hartke 410VX is not a very deep sounding cab. (I had one and sold it quickly) Something like an Ampeg SVT 410HLF will give you bottom end that rivals most 115 cabs, while still maintaining the punch and clarity of 10's. Peavey's Pro 410 is another deep yet punchy cab.

For me, size and weight is an issue. So, the fewer cabinets I need to carry...the better.

I use an Epi UL210/115 with a MB LMII. Both are 8 ohms. If I need more than that I add a UL212 and switch to a Demeter pre and QSC power amp. The 212 seems to fill the gap between the 210 and 115. If I need only 1 cab it is usually the 212.

However, sometimes I think of selling the 212 and getting a 410, sometimes a think "why bother". GAS is a painfull thing.

thanks Dog! Good info to have. I never tried the Ampeg cabs. They go for as low as $450 used on CL in my area, but I really need to lighten my load. So now I have 3 main pieces (rack case with head and associated wires and power strip and tuner) weighing in at 45 lbs, ditto the 210 and 15 cabs. Hopefully the sum of those parts will not make me miss the Hartke 410, which I agree was not deep sounding, but I always liked that punch it packed. Maybe I should have looked into the 410HLF, but I never felt the need. We'll see once I play this new rig live next month...

I've used 15" combos (Ampeg B15N and B100R), 410 rigs (Music Man HD-130, 410XL) and have finally settled on a 115/210 Hartke setup. I use an HA2500 head (all I need, for the venues I play any more -- and there are always the subs in the PA for serious stuff) with a 210 and a 115. Small gigs? The head and the 210. Bigger gigs? Both. Plus, each of my basses sounds better through one or the other speaker.

Besides that, I use the 115 with my Fender Band-Master VM to play my ES-335 through -- instant jazzer.

Your set up sounds like it will do the job, and then some. And, thought I would add that every "deep" 410 cab I have ever used is about 100# or more. I mean....my wife only weighs 115 and I don't carry her around! Rock on man!!

Any other votes out there? I would like to get at least 100 total votes, so I have a decent sample size.

I traded for an Epifani PS 112. So now I have a Trace 1518c single 15 cab, my old Hartke 210XL and the 112. Between the 3, I have some nice options. The 15 on the bottom, and one of the other 2 for either the more "punchy" or more "pillowy" sound. I can even use the 112 and 210 together for a smaller mini-rig that is 4 ohms. At practice the 12+15 combo sounded big and mean. We'll test it out at a wedding gig in 2 weeks. Looking forward to that one. And fat enough so that I didn't even use my Sansamp.

I like the modular approach not only for my back, but for the tone I get from my 15 and the flexibility of taking 1 cab when it'll do. I usually use both and sheepishly admit that 1 would have been fine. My Epi 210 is only 38lbs and the 15 under 50 lbs. I would never choose to lug a 410 around, and don't feel I've mad any sonic compromise whatsoever, just payed a bit more for the privelege.

And the slide rule crowd is probably having the vapors about now. :p

I now wish I'd bought an Avatar 210 to go with my Avatar 212 instead of a second B212, so I'd have something smaller/lighter for practice. The B212 pair sounds awesome but the 210/212 does too (I now know) and my back would be happier. :D

Take in all the info, then find what works for you.

yes, indeed this thread is old now! Amazing how time flies by...

In the years since this thread started, I have been playing the 1518c and really enjoy it. I now have an Epifani PS112 that I have been using as my main cab for the past several years, having moved away from the 210. I like the 112 by itself, and for added beef the 115 is a nice addition. Especially with flats on the passive P and J basses I use.

the 112 and 115 sound nice together in my opinion. I believe it is because they are similar in size, but I am sure there are some in TB land who would say my rig is garbage/stupid/whatever. To each his own.

Also since the thread started I have moved from the Ampeg to a LMII and then about a year or so ago to a GB Shuttle 6.0 which I really love a lot.
