Orange Amps questions

you have all made that very clear without telling me why this isn't true or telling me what to do instead

Read up on matching speaker sizes in the stickies. A 115 may have no more bottom end than a 410. The 115 will only handle, at m most, 1/2 the power of the 410

Now.... The TB500's a very cool amp. Has an impedance select (4/8 ohm) switch too, rare for non all tube amps, enabling full power into either load.
(oh, read up on impedance/ohms too:))
I'd go for that. Very very close sound to the AD200 & a fair bit more headroom.
Ppl are just being silly, they really quite helpful if you're patient:cool:

Thank you very much. I'll look into all that cabinet stuff

For you guys posting "410/115...does this never die," and mocking the poster, who has said he's a teenager, and doesn't know much: Shame on you.

Rather than bash him, why not take 30 seconds of your day to post why that might, or, might not be a bad idea. Being helpful is an option, even it's a question that's been asked and answered many times. Or: don't post. That is, in fact, also an option here.

To the original poster:
not all 15's are in fact tuned lower than a 410. Not all 15's have power handling to match very well with a 15. It's not an inherently bad idea, but, neither is it an inherently good idea.

After you get the TB500 ;) for pete's sake... Spend the $30 and replace the chinese made 12Ax7s that it comes with. Your eq will be glad you did...:hyper: and to save some money, shop used. I picked my TB500 for about 550.

15's bass vs 410... I've yet to find something with "more bass" than my SVT410HLF. That being said, my future plans are possibly including a Fearful 15/6. Would be sooner rather than later had I not just ordered a new Taylor 618e.. (don't hate me for the guitar, I'd rather play power chords on a jumbo guitar over an acoustic bass anyday for our acoustic sets)

whose tubes are the best? Link me

JO3YW:
"whose tubes are best" is not a valid question, really....best for what?
Best for an really gritty overdriven tone? Best for a warm, organic, harmonic tone?
Best for a clean, hi fidelity tone?

Your best bet there is probably to call someone like dougs tubes, or tube depot, and tell them what amp you have, and what tone you like, and have someone who is very well versed in the hundreds of 12ax7's available recommend something for your personal prefs and equipment.

Im thinking of a pretty harsh, gritty tone. I'll ring them once I'm set on getting the new amp. Thanks

The TB500 will do that stock. No need to swap the tubes. It's a LOUD amp, be sure to get a good, solid 410 or two.(or whatever cab/s you decide on.
I like 212's meself. One for most & two for big, loud gigs. GK, Mesa, Bergantino, Aguilar & GB are just a few who make good ones.
Check the classifieds here, & be sure to ask as many questions as you like here too. Best to be in the know than to waste $$ on inferior gear.

You really need to read up on tube amps vs solid state amplifiers and decide which one suits you best.

Reading about tube amps isn't going to put a stupid grin on your face like playing them will. (This coming from a developing tube snob ymmv). The terror is a great head though still that does the tube sound and feel very well I think.

Good call.

The TB500 would be a damn good amp instead of the 200b if you want to spend less.
I think you'd be happy with either Bass Terror. It'll get you going in bands and on stage and everything. If you still love its flavor a few years from now go all in on the AD.

When I was a kid in HS I saved up for like 9 months and got what I figured was the ultimate amp at the time... Ampeg SVT-4. Anyway, 15 years later I have bought/sold/traded through a lot of different amps as my ears and understanding of things kept evolving.

I'd say go for the terror 500 if you want to go orange, great head! I have owned it and gigged the hell out of it, always did me good! I would also consider looking into old solid state sunn stuff if you can find it at the right price. I have an old 80's randall r300 which I picked out of the trash, and it does a great overdriven aggressive punchy tone. for what you wan't I would say keeping an eye on the used market. might get you more bang for your buck than buying a new orange amp.

The AD200 is a glorious beast of an amp and well worth saving for if you like the tone. You can get better range of gain if you put a lower gain preamp tube in V1 or V2. Also, Orange master volume circuit is double logarithmic so a lot of volume is beyond 12 o'clock which is still clean if the gain is below about 9 o'clock. This is counter intuitive to folks that are used to a lot of other amps where all of the clean is before noon on the master.

If you do go with the TB 500, I happen to like mine a lot with a 4x10". 15"s were too slow and thick for this head. A 6x10" or an 8x10" are also a good combo, but you get a bit more low mids the more speakers you add, which to me the TB has PLENTY of with a 4x10".

Only rig I've played with an AD200 was with a 1x15" and a 2x10" on top. Hard to describe, but it definitely has something dancing and fluid that the Terror doesn't have. Preamp sound is essentially the same, but when you start to get the power stage on the AD200 cooking, it's awesome.

Both great heads, but if you have the extra scratch and don't mind the schlep and maintenance of an all-tube bass head, the AD200 is my pick.
