Orange Amps questions

Im thinking of a pretty harsh, gritty tone. I'll ring them once I'm set on getting the new amp. Thanks

I play mostly Thrash and use a TB1000 into a Eden 410xlt or sometimes into an Ampeg810. if your not going to use pedals to get your grit/grind I would suggest the TB500, the 1000 is super loud (almost too loud) and if you plan on cranking the gain knob your grit, your going to most likely ridiculously loud for your band with the 1000. IMO.

FWIW, I think the OBC115 and the AD200B is a great combo. It's an incredibly tight and punchy 15 and is rated at 400W. If you go the AD200 route - I would sincerely recommend this cab.

The TB's definitely dial a version of the AD200, but the AD200 is going to give you a response, warmth, and growl that only a tube power section can offer.

If you haven't seen this video it can give you a better idea:

Keep in mind that although Orange advertises that the Terror Bass series has the same preamp as the AD200, that is in fact only partially true. There may be many similarities between the two circuits but the AD200 has a passive tone stack where the controls are interactive and flat is around treble 2, mid 10, bass 2. The Terror Bass heads all have Baxandall style EQs with center detents indicating flat at 12 o'clock.

Yes and no. I think they are (maybe slightly) different, but the Terror has a Fender tone stack, not Baxandall, similar to the AD200. So the treble and bass are roughly boost only and mids are cut only.

See the Bass Gear Mag review from a year or so back for the bench test that scopes the pre.

It comes from driving on the wrong side of the road

Doh! That's like me a number of years back telling an Australian engineer who had transferred to our group that the world map he had posted in his office was upside down.
:hiding:

I play mostly rock, blues, and funk, and have three cabinets I think would sound great with an Orange Terror bass amp:
1. A twin 3012HO cab (800w thermal, 630w excursion limit)
2. A .5 aligned sealed 610 cab (900w thermal, 550w excursion limit)
3. A pair of Baer ML112 cabs (800w thermal, 700w excursion limit)

I'm sure 500 watts would be plenty to make these cabs sound great but is the TB1000 too much? I'm wondering if there is a similarity to the GK 700RBII versus 1001RBII? More players seem to prefer the 700RB because it gets that signature GK tone at reasonable volume levels, while pushing the 1001RB to get it there just makes it too loud. Would this also be the case with the Orange TB500H versus TB1000H? I'd like to buy one used but don't know if 500 is really the optimum for my cabs or is the 1000 still manageable getting a great tone at reasonable volume?

The TB500 can peak to 900w; I don't even want to know what the TB1000's peaks would be. That said, depending on the efficiency of those cabs, you might be able to run the 1000 more conservatively and have a bit more clean headroom without actually exceeding your drivers' limits. I do know a local bassist who runs the TB1000 with nothing but an Epi 3x10 rated for 700w and he hasn't had any problems with blown drivers.
