orange amps...

I am really looking forward to trying an Orange head someday, but I do have to add that in the sub-$1,000 price range, I like used Mesa Boogie or Trace Elliot tube heads, or if you want a killer value new, I'll second the Traynor. What a great amp!

Cab-wise, I love the NV series Bergs, but I am finding that the very efficient Sadowsky cabs (SA210 and SA410) are stupid good for the money, and great with both tube and SS amps.

It is quite possibe for a 410 to sound better than an 810 of identical (although double) specs with the same wattage. It depends on the cab. My NV 610 certainly sounds better with more wattage, but I find that an Ampeg 610 does not require more power to get the full tonal characteristics, and sometimes indeed sounds better with less juice.

Its not really a risk with any amp. Clipping, or running an amp into distortion, will create volume spikes greater than the rated wattage (if its an SS amp), but with a low power amp the spikes at worst can possibly harm a tweeter. Even then, most amps have built in protection circuitry.

Well, I got a chance to do all of that yesterday. I didn't have much time and I didn't play that loud (West Music in Davenport, IA is an everything store...from baby grand pianos to strings, brass, woodwinds, drums, and the stuff we'd normally see... Lot's of folks in the store and the electric room is pretty small so I wanted to be considerate.

Anyway...the AD200B is yummy and oh so cool looking!!! I set the tone controls on the typical-passive-tone-stack-close-to-flat setting (2-10-2) and it sounded great through an Ampeg 8x10. I played through an Ampeg PB212 also and preferred the sound with the tweeter turned all the way off.

Using both Geddy Jazz and '50s RI P Bass, it all suited my Pat "Dirty" Dougherty (Black Oak Arkansas)/Mars Cowling (Pat Travers) style perfectly.

I did notice that the switches are "upside down"...down is "on" for both Power (with a cute little graphic of a UK configuration mains plug that would be completely lost on most North American customers) and Standby.

I was in a hurry (still had a four hour drive ahead of me) and didn't get a chance to seek out special settings, but the tone controls all made a subtle difference and all were very usable.

I really enjoyed the sonic girth of the 8x10 and wish I hadn't sold mine a number of years ago. It's not a cabinet that I'd want to have to haul anywhere (especially since it wouldn't fit in my present auto and I'd have to arm-wrestle my wife for the minivan), but it would be a heck of a lot of fun at home!!!

Just as I was putting everything away and getting ready to leave, a sales guy finally popped his head in the room and mentioned that they had just received the Orange 4x10 (he called it a 4x12, but I knew better) and 1x15 bass cabinets. i didn't get a chance to see them.

Perhaps they'll be there when I go back in a couple weeks (although he said that the cabinets didn't last long when they had them in stock before).

I'd like to compare the Orange against my Walkabout at the levels that I play at... I'll bet the Walkabout would do pretty well. And with the Orange costing 3 to 4 times as much as my brand new GC-List Sale Walkabout did, the AD200B would have to be pretty amazing to make me seriously consider buying one.

Did I mention that the AD200B is pretty cool looking???:D

Subtle being the operative word, too subtle for me in fact; I prefer more variety for my money and you do get that with other amps.
For around the same money in the UK I can go to Matamp (the orignal home of Orange) and have one built to my speck and finish, go to this site and see what I mean, Invalid Link Removed, if you do phone them you speak to the owner not some sales geek.

I didn't think Matamp made 200 watters anymore? I thought only Electric Amp did. :confused:

Does anybody know what speaker is in the OCB115.
Orange does not have the specs, and I can only
assume:confused: that since these are British amps
that it would probably come with either a Celestion or a Fane;
but I wouldn't be suprised to hear Eminence.

A hundred years ago...well, OK, the '70s, Orange used EV SROs in their bass cabinets sporting 15s.

The new cabinet looks like an EV TL606...which was designed for an EVM 15L (or B).

If the question hasn't been answered by then, I'll inquire at the dealer I stopped at on Tuesday. It won't be for a couple weeks though.

Personally, I can't understand why there isn't much info on the site about their bass gear. How difficult would it be to hire a kid to update their web site. Heck, my 15 year old son is always trying to drum up web site business...
