ORANGE BASS TERROR: The Review!

You are probably referring to a thread I started over there.

DIs are mic level, the XLR out is line level +4 db according to Orange. Might be more if you turn up the gain knob. If you want to avoid troubles when playing live you need to have a fix for this, because I haven't yet plugged in in a board that could handle it.

I bought a -25 db attenuator, some others apparently a -40 db. The latter seems to work for sure, I yet have to test out mine.

I like the idea of using an attenuator, I'll look into that.

Have you tried recording with the attenuator? That might shed some light on how successful the attenuator is, I just want to get a nice cleanish signal so hopefully it's an issue that can be easily fixed, and hopefully the signal isn't always clipping/distorted (with low gain) from the amps DI even with attenuation.

I think I asked this earlier but can't you put a DI pedal in the effects loop and use it to go to the board instead of the amp's DI since it will have the amp's tone? That's what I'm hoping to be able to do when I pick up my TB. Please correct me if I'm wrong (and have false hopes )

It's the only thing I'm still worried about, aside from that I'm really sold on this amp, looks and sounds incredible!

Good to hear, it has gotten some rave reviews...I'm thinking of pairing it with a 2-15 cab......

anyone know if Orange might discontinue the 500 and only make the 1000?

I don't think they will do that.
The 500 is sooo loud, that I don't see any use in the 1000 (except for pushing even bigger walls of cabs).

by the way: I love my terror bass! using it for over half a year now. Had gigs with it and no issues with the DI or stuff.... I havn't used it in the studio yet though....

I just picked up the Bass Terror and am totally digging it so far! I'm running it out of the new Bergantino 212 and the setup kills! Very loud.... and the gain knob acts as a sort of dirty overdrive built in to the amp. I play in an alt/garage rock band and a dance rock band and have never gone above 4 with the volume. To me the Terror 1000 would be overkill. Unless you wanted to power multiple cabs.

Me personally...I love the portability of this rig. The cab fits in the back seat of my car easily and the head is the size of a toaster and comes with its own gigbag....and its a powerhouse rig! It was right up there with my GK 1001rb through my 410rbh and 115rbh in terms of volume and presence.

I did A/B it with the GK MB500 dual channel. Both are loud and solid. But just as suspected, the Orange gives a warm tone where you can add grit and punch and with the GK it is very prestine, clean and punchy.

i got my Terror Bass in July.
Early on, i was using an Ampeg B200R cab (bypassing the b200r amp). 4ohm. Sounded good. The cab rattled and shook until the head almost fell off several times. But that was a cab issue.

DI has been too hot for most sound guys.
FX loop is too hot for pedals. read it was meant for rack gear.

So, I had a gig last weekend.
TB through a 250watt 8ohm Ashdown 2x10 & a 300watt 8ohm EV TL-606. Impedance switch was set to 4ohms,
Second to last song of the 40 minute set, only song i play with a pick - i'm picking hard, digging in to add a bit of grit to it.
Amp cuts out.
Power is on. Cables are good. Momentary cut out.
No crackle, no sputter.
Came back, played, did it again. 2 more times.
Volume was at 10 o'clock. Gain at noon.
I've read that it was most likely a built in safety measure.
To prevent damage, if there is a voltage dip - it cuts out.
Disappointing.
Now I'm all kinds of paranoid about playing it out.
I don't know if it's a class D thing.
I've read the Markbass has a similar preventive measure built into it as well.

Voltage dips can effect lots of gear, my Crown power amps cut out this summer at a festival. My Tiny Terror was not acting up, but the Crowns shutting down may have improved the voltage situation. The beer cooler was on our circuit, so once they took it off all was normal.

I ran my Terror with my 4 ohm carvin 4 x 10...it sounded incredible....Im thinking of getting an 8 ohm 4 x 10 and an 8 ohm 15 and run it for my next gig.......I am loving this Orange

the general consensus seems to be that these things are very loud, is it hard to dial in a usable bedroom level? I mostly play at home, but I would like an amp that can handle jams and smaller gigs too

Perfectly possible if you keep the gain low, distorted sounds at bedroom levels are not that easy. The fan noise is a con though...

I just got mine in the mail and have been playing it all afternoon. I only have a pa speaker to play it through but im loving the tone can't wait till I get my orange cabs.

By the way I owned a ad200 and HATED it. So thats saying something. I dont find the tones similar.

Used the OTB on Saturday at the Half Moon. They have an excellent sound man and PA there.
The DI signal was way too hot for the desk. I had to go Sansamp to PA and through the OTB set flat with low gain. Sounded great though.
I've just ordered a 40db inline attenuator to use next time. That should cure it.

Update

Used the attenuator at the next Half Moon gig. Worked perfectly and the sound man was placated.
Other gigs I need it 50% of the time. Depends on the PA/soundman. Well worth buying at only £5.

I really don't find it to be all that loud. You forget it once you start playing.

The fan on my Orange TT is actually quieter than on the Crown power amps. Not a problem at live gigs at all.

Off course fans are no problem live... I was talking bedroom... In my humble opinion it's a big con, because the amp doesn't need a fan at those volume levels.

Anyone know any shops in atlanta currently stocking the terror bass amp? I went into Discount Music a little while back and they had the AD200 and 410 and 115 cabs, it was a gorgeous rig, but either a speaker was blown or there was a bad tube in the amp or something cause it was sounding farty even at a low volume, they said they were going to take a look at it, I haven't had a chance to go back since then though.

I'm really interested in the Terror Bass right now as I could afford it if I sell my Stingray which I'm definitely considering!

Hey all,

So, i just got an orange bass terror to go alongside my walkabout ( doing a super light rig, more to come when i get the cab to match the head!)

I have read a lot about people changing the preamp tubes in the mesa, that got me thinking about the orange, does anybody know what kind of tubes are in there and if changing them would make any difference?

I left the mesa tubes in the walkabout assuming that with the price i paid for the amp mesa must at least put something half decent in them.
The orange on the other hand is cheap and made in china, which leads me to believe that they would save money on cheap tubes!

Opinions?

PS: the amp is pretty muddy compared to the walkabout going through the same scout cab, and the gain start braking up really soon, would different tubes help?

Just opened it up and i cant see any marking on the tubes...
