Orange Terror Bass 500/1000 + 15/6?

I've had my eye on one of the Orange Terror Bass amps to use with my LDS nEarful 15/6 (with tweeter) in my 80's hair metal band, where my Tecamp Puma1000 is simply too clean and pure sounding.

Had anyone tried either of these amps with a 15/6 type cabinet. The switchable power between 4 and 8 ohms seems like it would be a great compliment to the 8 ohm nature of the 3015LF.

500 watts might very well be enough given the voicing of this head, but the 1000 is certainly appealing.

Anyone? :ninja:

I have no experience with fEarful cabs, but I own a Terror 500 and can tell you it is one mean mother. A Terror + Bag End 2x12 = stupid loud, and tiny footprint. My Trace Elliot 5001 is cleaner and nicer, and my Shuttle 6.0 is smaller, but the Terror is the pick of the litter. Volume for days, and an attitude that would have it jailed in most states.

How do you live without a tuner pedal? Never again for this guy :)

I'd steer clear of those el cheapo Oranges. The warranty is not transferable, not compellingly good, and they've had a ton of failures. And they're way more expensive for what they do than say an MB500 would be.

I'd go MB500 if I were you. Perfect hair metal sound with the boost channel and some eq. And can be had for 400-450 if you shop around new. Got mine for 450 with a 3 year warranty extension (which is transferable).

Lol, I enjoyed reading that

The 500watts may be enough, it seems 'almost' comparable in volume to my 1001rbII, I haven't cranked either head past 12 on the dial but you certainly get the impression of lots of volume.

I've read plenty regarding the Orange Terror and I haven't seen too many people complain about failures. Most new gear warranty isn't transferable.

I picked one up used from the classifieds and I love it. Seems well put together is super punchy and loud. I'm going to need to add another 2x10 because it seems like it could crush the Acme Low B2 I have if I really push it. My only complaint is the EQ isn't super responsive in adjustments, but it sounds great.

Where are you getting your information about the terror? Have you ever been in the same room as one? Or is your information hearsay that has channeled through to you from one of the many orange haters? Be honest now. I'll admit, orange is expensive.

I explored buying one, but the warranty is not transferable which is a deal breaker for me. That's a fact. And I know of at least one person who had issues getting theirs repaired under warranty -- it got done, but it took a lot of time and hassles.

It's hearsay about the reliability, duh that's all there is. There have been lots of broken ones.

What does me being in the room with one have to do with talking about the reliability? Even if I owned one, I couldn't generalize experience with one to reliability about all of them.

My opinion is the head is expensive for what you get, and an MB500 would get the job done for this project at half the price.

its $699 from rainbowmusic which is a pretty decent deal. It may cost more than other similar heads, but there are definitely other amps that are way more expensive for what they are. Go price an SWR SM900. I'd love to try one, but never for the price they go for.

theyre two different amps so I would call them apples and oranges.

You cant compare price points on a solid state amp to a hybrid one.

You might as well compare a hybrid amp to an SVT and say the SVT is too expensive.

I haven't heard anything about the terror basses breaking. The original tiny terror guitar amps had a few issues in the earlier models, but Orange did a really good job of taking note of all the warranty repairs that were coming in and fixed the problems, and the newer ones have been extremely reliable. I have a bunch of friends who have them. So I imagine that if there were failures of the terror basses that most of the production problems would have been taken care of by now.

I got my Terror for $679 off Ebay, and no issues at all save the orange light bulb not working. I can live with that. :D

In the end, the Bass Terror is an individual. A living, breathing, chest-thumping, smack-my-ass-and-call-me-Betty type. Works for me. I can easily understand anyone not wanting it as much as I understand someone wanting it.

There are tons of all solid state amps that operate in the price brackets that hybrids do.

You are correct but you know as well as I do that different brands will almost always cost more than others. Its known that GK stuff will always be awesome gear at a kick ass price just like we'll always know that comparable Orange stuff will be good gear at those same GK kick ass prices + 25%.

Yep, I know it.

Here's what you do if you want a hybrid head--get an MB FUsion and use one of the 15 or 20% off coupons floating around today ;)

For 570 the MB Fusion is pretty ridonkulous.

I can understand you not wanting a pedal. I don't dig 'em.
Though that VT bass pedal really seems to work pretty nice, and you can put it on the top of your head, or cab, set it and forget it, and not have floor clutter and a lot of extra cable length.

After saying all that, if you want the Orange, go get it;)
I haven't played the bass version, yet, but I know several guys that have, and love, the guitar version.
