Sure it's possible. I'm at U of M studying with Diana, but I am getting just as much orchestra experience as I am with solo playing. There is even an orchestra rep class here led by the assistant principal of Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Although the techniques involved in solo and orchestra are rather different, I feel it is very beneficial here to get a sense of both styles of playing. I know I'm only speaking from a Michigan standpoint, but students here have also gotten first stand at top noch festivals, continued at grad schools like Juiliard, and gotten great performance opportunities. Also, if you still feel like you're not getting enough orchestral experience, there's always summer festivals too.
