My setup is similar to Mr. Fitzgerald's. I run my chain directly into the FX return and use my head as just a power amp. The advantage for me is that regardless of the amp/cab combinations, I always have my setup so to speak. That holds true for backlined gigs and the odd rehearsal space. It's just a matter of tweaking some EQ. It did however take me a long time to get to this setup.
