Double Bass Ordered a Nick Lloyd bass today!

The bass will be in next week Thursday, June 7. I'll probably pick it up late that night or next morning as I have a gig.

You know what's weird? I decided I was going to have Nick build me a bass on June 8 of last year after three days at the ISB. I went and had a nice meal in downtown San Fran after a frenzy of looking at 50 instruments, and even though I hadn't figured out how I would swing it, I felt really good about my decision. Hearing DaXun play Bach on his nearly identical Lloyd later that night made me feel even more certain.

So one year later to the day, I'll get to wake up and play the bass I had picked out for myself . Kind of cool, right? :)

Stay tuned. Let's see how I did!

I'm thrilled!

The bass is even more beautiful than I had expected. I'm biased, but having seen 4 Lloyd basses, I think this is the prettiest. He really nailed the varnish. It's hard to capture in pictures but it can range from looking reddish to a nice deep yet transparent brown. The flame on the back is insane and has some 3D qualities to it. I'm loving the glossy varnish. Also some cool hand tool marks on the scroll and back of the headstock. And the very cool burnished Sloane machines!

The tone is very punchy. And it's LOUD. My wife was worried I was going to bother the neighbors. Lots of projection. When I want it to, it really kicks in to high gear. The whole bass vibrates like crazy. Easy to hear pitch because it's clear and resonant. I know once I get used to it my intonation will be at a very high level, and it's not bad right now.

The playability is great. I have it really low and no buzzing. Getting into thumb is seamless with the shoulders, and painless. It also feels like I'm not reaching back at all in half position. It fits me being smaller than the average guy really well.

The extension is working seamlessly as well. Bandmates are enjoying it. Can't wait to an orchestra job with it. I love that it's all black and doesn't distract from the scroll, which is also wonderful looking and again the best I've seen from Nick yet.

I will post some pics/vids when I have some time. I have 7 gigs this week though so be patient and I'll get some up.

Hi Guys,
just had a couple of pictures of my Nick Lloyd bass build. Here is the front and one piece back (with some small wings on the bottom bouts of the same wood, same grain). Im really excited and after seeing Robins am even more so.

....How are your gigs going with your new bass Robin? Whats your set up? Spiros and realist?

Geoff

The bass is opening up very quickly- every few days of practicing or gigging I'm hearing improvement. People I play with a freaking out. One outdoor concert I did with a swing band and good sound man was particularly devastating. My saxophonist was late and turned around after the third tune and asked if that was a new bass, and told me after the gig that the tone glued the whole band together in a way he had never heard us. And my last bass was a pretty great instrument as well, so you know this is awesome when people cane really hear the difference so easily. q

I'm trying to show it some of symphony cats here shortly as well. Nick just sent me some Bel Cantos to try on it that I will have for my occasional arco oriented gigs.

I am super busy but will post some pics and vids eventually here.

Geoff, your bass looks like it's coming along very quickly! It's going to be so worth it.
