Double Bass Ordered a Nick Lloyd bass today!

T My saxophonist was late and turned around after the third tune and asked if that was a new bass, and told me after the gig that the tone glued the whole band together in a way he had never heard us. And my last bass was a pretty great instrument as well, so you know this is awesome when people cane really hear the difference so easily.

That's fantastic. Always a great feeling when that happens. :)

Bad ones though.

Thanks for the additional pics to drool over. Sorry if you already answered this but what type of finish was used?

Thanks for posting. The F holes and scroll look amazing. I love the back of the scroll and C extension.
The finish is superb. You can tell from the pics that it is really rich and I bet it looks amazing in real life. You must be delighted Robin.....oh, and the back is outrageous!

Mine is coming along so I will post some pics soon.

Cheers Geoff

Got the opportunity to play around with some of Mr. Lloyd's art today at the Austin bassfest. BEAUTIFUL sounds and soooo easy on the eyes. Even brought one with the most gorgeous low C of the exhibition.

It's such a blessing to see and hear art of this calibre being made.

I'm thrilled!

The bass is even more beautiful than I had expected. I'm biased, but having seen 4 Lloyd basses, I think this is the prettiest. He really nailed the varnish. It's hard to capture in pictures but it can range from looking reddish to a nice deep yet transparent brown. The flame on the back is insane and has some 3D qualities to it. I'm loving the glossy varnish. Also some cool hand tool marks on the scroll and back of the headstock. And the very cool burnished Sloane machines!

The tone is very punchy. And it's LOUD. My wife was worried I was going to bother the neighbors. Lots of projection. When I want it to, it really kicks in to high gear. The whole bass vibrates like crazy. Easy to hear pitch because it's clear and resonant. I know once I get used to it my intonation will be at a very high level, and it's not bad right now.

The playability is great. I have it really low and no buzzing. Getting into thumb is seamless with the shoulders, and painless. It also feels like I'm not reaching back at all in half position. It fits me being smaller than the average guy really well.

The extension is working seamlessly as well. Bandmates are enjoying it. Can't wait to an orchestra job with it. I love that it's all black and doesn't distract from the scroll, which is also wonderful looking and again the best I've seen from Nick yet.

I will post some pics/vids when I have some time. I have 7 gigs this week though so be patient and I'll get some up.

Although this is an ancient thread, I feel the urge to add to the excitement- I have as late as today had the opportunity to play a Nick Lloyd standard. And that one is, like yours obviously, supermonster loud, sounds absolutely amazing, speaks lightning fast, plays like a dream, feels right at home, comes across rock-solid and stunningly beautiful... and almost makes me want to sell my 1830ish Hungarian on the spot (and I'm really happy with my bass- the Lloyd seems like my bass‚ only "considerably more of it"...) and try and figure out a failsafe way to get the rest of the money together to buy it. Really great great instruments. Congrats.

Best
