Ordered an Audere JZ3 Pre-Amp; What Should I Expect?

I just ordered it for my Passive MIJ Fender Jazz 66' Limited Edition Reissue. It sounds great passive...like really really great. I understand the differences between J-Retro's and Audere Pre's (I have a J-Retro in my Fender Custom Classic Jazz). I went with an Audere because I really love the passive tone of this bass. I can virtually guarantee that my switch will live in the 'Mid Z Setting' 99% of the time, and will never see the 'High Z.' I went with Volume/Balance, High Mid/Low Mid, Treble / Bass. I have always wanted to try one of these and figure there is no harm in it because I can simply just return it to passive if I don't like it. I don't mind spending the money to keep the guys at Audere in Business and earning a living...I try to support these types of companies making specialty bass products whenever possible.

So....What can I expect?

Is it possible to get really close to my passive tone with everything flat?

You will like it and probably will vary the tone more than you think. I have them in three basses now. There are a couple of Audere threads out there where you can see the pics. I have a 4 band Z in a J bass and love it. Very transparent at the flat setting. Also have a 3 band Z in a Mustang and a custom dual siamese twin Classic in a Spectorcore (one pre for the piezo and one for the mag with VV, TT, MM, BB stacked controls).

Thank you for the input! It feels ironic and counterintuitive to me to seek out a pre-amp for a bass that has a passive tone I really enjoy...but that is exactly why I think the Audere will be perfect for this particular bass! I am really looking forward to having mid freq controls on the fly.

I have the JZ6D version in my Carvin SB5000 J-style five-string. It's got the four-band rotary EQ controls, plus the six-position "Z" rotary mode switch which yields six combinations between the three Z modes and the two pickups. Very versatile, very clean, very quiet. Excellent quality.

Although I didn't expect to like the dual high-Z setting, I do. It's the tonal opposite of the smooth, hi-fi tone that I usually like - at least in a non-J bass with humbucker pickups, onboard preamp, and a neck-through body. But that's why it really works for this instrument - which is punchy, barky & bright.

Or you can put a Marcus Miller type custom pickguard and do all the controls you want. :-)
