Origin Effects DCX Bass: EQ or Drive?

DCX Bass: Which function do you use more? EQ or Drive?

I asked cos I wanted to hear from users how they interact with each other. I always had the idea of putting the DCX (or any drive pedal for that matter) in front of the BassRig, never after, and I was just asking if it's a combo people are happy with here on TB :)
I think if you look around a bit you'll see a couple threads on the DCX Bass. It is quit popular and very, very few detractors. We have a two unit owner weighing in who knows something about pedals!

If you buy it, try it and for some God only knows reason, before OR after your Super Vintage. Then you'll have no problem selling it...but, get the BLACK as it is all the rage!

i use mine in drive mode front of my Bassrig SV since i prefer it's OD tones better than the Bassrig's.

To me, the EQ mode makes the DCX a perfect pedal for live DI rigs.
I use it on EQ mode, always on, just before my JDI. Makes my basses sound great when going directly to the desk. On my passive basses, I tend to amplify the bass and level towards 14:00, while nudging the treble towards 13:00.

I use the EXACT settings you described but for live as well. No amp or sim needed. The adaptive gain in EQ mode is magic. And bumping the treble and bass a little past noon, like you described, gives you the “like your bass, but more” sound.

EQ mode for the win.

Pray tell...was the DCX Bass detracting from your overall sound or just prefer something more that you could share with the uninitiated? :cigar:

I chose an Xotic BB Bass Preamp in its place.
The DCX is a fantastic pedal that makes your rig sound $1500 more expensive. The treble and bass frequencies are chosen just right. However, the treble and bass registers are handled by a Noble on my board and I preferred the texture the BB Preamp gave me in that context.
I play well worn flats on top of that, so the DCX party trick did not really apply to me - I often use dirt to add as much treble as possible.

Is that the Xotic BB Bass Preamp V2?

Speaking of Low and High frequencies, I find it weird that Origin Effects isn't clear about the frequencies of their pedals. See the DCX Bass, LF and HF... cool, but which actual freq? No mention of them in the manual.

BassRig SV (which I really like)? You get to know the three Mid frequencies affected by the switch, but again no mention of the Low and High knobs freq, or the Lo Cut/Ultra High switch freq....

Any reasons? Does anyone happens to know more?

I believe:

DCX Bass is LF = 39Hz HF = 4KHz

DCX Boost is LF = 40Hz HF = ?KHz

Just not sure on the guitar boost, but I think it's perhaps 6KHz, but don't hold me to that.

DCX BASS:
HF - 5.3k || LF - 39hz

I would love to hear a side by side of the noble and DCX EQ. I wonder if it could be an alternative for those looking for the Noble mojo without the Noble price. @IvanBassist ?
I guess the curious would need to shell out a bunch of shekels or search for samples...I expect it's little similarities beyond a Bass, potential EQ points, maybe, and the overall tone being more dissimilar on the whole.

I've never heard anyone say...Ya know...I was thinking Noble (with the $$$ to do it), but this DCX Bass is the same except for the tube, DI and potentially distribution! Haven't heard anyone say that?

I’m sure you’re right. I guess the similarity could be in their “correct” DI tones that both products advertise.

But I do expect that they will sound quite different. My guess is the noble will be more open and “3D” and the DCX will be more warm and dense with its saturation. But I would love to see how the overall quality matches up.

Hmmm 3D...yes... correct....dense...ya...and adaptiveness... saturation...to be sure...same/same.

I got the old one, but I believe they are identical.
I'd have to agree with flats and the Noble and a passive Bass if it were a choice. If your doing plug and play, get it right the first time without the need for a lot of tinkering to get it there and fat warm bulbus tone is the goal, perhaps really splurging with an Effectrode LA-1A to get those three extra tubes dancing,...then yes, the mojo exceeds the DCX Bass. But, the DCX Bass, in my opinion, goes far beyond with the edge than the Noble and certainly in the cost benefit analysis.

Noble Great!

DCX Bass great'er

That’s exactly what I want to find out. I’m thinking about using the Noble only for recording and taking the DCX on the road together with my Quad Cortex.
