Origin Effects DCX Bass: EQ or Drive?

The DCX is one of the most touch sensitive drive pedals I ever played, and the EQ is absolutely great. If I regularly played roundwounds, I would have kept it for sure.
Since it is quite versatile, you can assign different functions to it, and in direct comparison, it surely can do a few things the Noble can't. The Noble is a clean preamp/DI with two band EQ. Nothing more. But also nothing less.
The DCX absolutely sucks at delivering a clean balanced signal to FOH (because there's no balanced output).
The Noble absolutely sucks as a drive pedal.
As soon as you factor in cost, the Noble is basically out. You get a decent preamp with decent DI for a quarter of the Noble price tag. It's a vanity product for sure, targeted at tone hunters with fat wallets.
Question. Since you have two pedals, have you tried running the DCX drive mode into the DCX EQ mode?
I wonder if it would just sound like more clipping… or if something fancy would happen with the adaptive circuitry, making one behave like a drive and the other like an amp? Probably not… but I’m curious.
Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse to buy the black one.
I had been thinking the Bass RC Booster mentioning V2. You are correct, the Bass BB Preamp V1.5 is the same with power up top, 9-18v operation & White Top Hat knobs. Same thing.

I’m thinking of getting a DCX Bass but not the black version. I actually find the regular one nicer. Plus it’ll aesthetically blend better with my BassRig SV and Cali76 CB.

I have #0025 and love the EQ mode. I bought and sold the first version of the DCX Bass but immediately ended up missing the analog mojo it delivers, so I picked up one of the new blackouts (pictured here with my 10th anniversary laser engraved Cali 76 CB). I replaced the knobs on my black edition DCX Bass with a grey set from Origin Effects to make it easier to see the settings.

Can you explain the adaptive magic some more. I am not hearing any tone change using the toggle switch.
The adaptive technology I’m talking about is related to dynamics. On the EQ side, the harder you play the darker the drive section becomes. For me this is really effective when running distortion into the DCX. It tightens up the unruliness of your dirt pedals and acts a little bit like an impulse response.
For the toggle switch, you can hear the difference more when you turn the drive past noon. It will roll off the high end more or less depending on the setting.
I keep my toggle flat and run a Lucydreamer before it. It’s a great combo. The lucydreamer is already pretty dark, so the brighter end of the DCX drive circuit pairs nicely.

Tonally, the OD side is reminding me of my old Tech21 RPM driven, but with added playing dynamic responsiveness, and without the semi-parametric mids, which I preferred to modify elsewhere anyhow. The LF and HF on the DCX are quicker to set effectively than the RPM's EQ, and less boomy/bright extremes. All that's just from memory though.
Anyone using a Para Driver primarily for the tone shaping should consider the DCX.

After a practice with the DCX in EQ mode back in December, I played it yesterday in OD mode. It is more what I’m expecting of this pedal to be fair.
I use a SansAmp BDDI V2 as my main sound and I feel like the EQ mode works better with no preamp after it, as many said it sounds like “your bass, but better”, but it’s not the sound I need in my band. It sounded good with fingers but a bit too dry with a pick.
I need the fullness and punch of the SansAmp and some added drive. That’s where the OD mode came in handy. Cali76 CB + DCX OD + SansAmp gave me the sound I was after. Punchy, even and a nice amount of drive. It cuts through the mix perfectly.
So all in all, it’s a great pedal, super versatile with so many sounds in it. Happy with it as an OD, but would be great as an EQ in a different band setting.
