original kubicki vs. fender custom kubicki

i am looking at getting a late 80's kubicki ex factor 4 and was wondering how can i tell the difference between the original and the fender custom kubicki. i understand that the original has an 18v preamp and the fender has a 9v. is the custom shop marked as such or if not is there any other visible way i can tell which is which.

Many, but not all, of the Fender versions have a Fender headstock logo on the back of the headstock. The easiest way to tell is by the serial number. There was a "range" of numbers produced by Fender. Search the web, and you will find that range.

thank you for that information. i looked and found that kubicki's were made by fender from 1988 to 1991 and the serial numbers made by fender were 1287 to 3049.

I had one for a while - and *old* one, beat to hell... it was an interesting bass... I side-by-sided it with newer "Fender" Kubicki's and found that I couldn't really tell the difference.

How much are they asking?

it is a trade that i am contemplating. i am considering trading a musicman stingray 5 for it. at the time that i suggested this to the other person i wasn't aware that there were 2 different kubicki's and was thinking that i was trading for an 18v original kubicki. this information does affect the deal and i will have to do some more research and careful thinking.

All the Kubickis were made by Phil,he just put in the Fenderized 9volt preamp, and put the FCS logo on the back of the headstock.I got that from Phil himself several years ago. Those are the only differences. The FCS basses were "not" actually made by Fender.
