Oteil's Custom Modulus

I believe that is just his symbol associated with him. Some hieroglyphic. Goes back to ‘Oteil from Egypt’ with Bruce Hampton and ARU. I am surprised he is not playing his Fodera. But the main bassists on the scene are modulus players like Mike Gordon, Schools, etc.

It is indeed an Ankh. He has stated it has nothing to do with Prince.

Doesn't matter what it looks like, it sounds good. Heck, Oteil can make a piece of plywood duct taped to a broomstick handle sound good.

Todd Rundgren had an all aluminum Ankh guitar back in the 70's. Kasim Sultan had a reverse Ankh bass made for the same tour (RA-circa. 1977) both sounded great

As already pointed out the design has nothing to do with Prince. Oteil chose purple for his Ankh bass because of Sun Ra. I don’t care for the way it looks but like the reasons he had it built this way.

I always thought this was a cool post from a couple of years ago. I used to see him play his original Modulus with Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit a bunch of times in the early 90s, missed the stuff after that, then started seeing him again with Dead & Co - on the same bass!



To be honest, I'm waiting for him to get an Alembic...

+1 on my gut reaction being "Prince." His royal purple reigning majesty would wholeheartedly approve.

Also +1 on the idea of Modulus becoming a full-on custom shop.

Would I use a bass like that? Nope. The style and ergonomics do not suit me at all. But what does my opinion even matter? I've been to plenty of peoples' houses where I disliked their decor, but it's their house and I'm just a guest in it.

Without that unicorn horn, not only would severe neck dive be an issue, but the reach to first position would be like 4 feet!

you could call that a design flaw... but to each his own... i'd take his other 6 string quantum if he persists...

Look where the strap attaches. That thing isn't going anywhere. Neckdive isn't that much of an issue if you utilize a decent strap.
